Hi,

I have had two molars removed (bottom left, most far back... sorry, I don't know the numbers!).
The procedure took about 30 mins, as one of them was a bitch to get out!

Anyway, it's been 5 days now (I'm on the 5th as I type), and I'm still in enough pain to require medication (only paracetamol and ibuprofen).
The procedure was a bit heavy, lots of pushing and pulling, lots of pressure on the gums...etc, so I'm just wondering if it's normal to have that much pain at this point in the recovery?

I still have the whole from the two teeth (one large hole), as it's closing up more and more each day. I have the clot(s) in there still, as I can see the dark colour and also the white is starting to build up a little.
I've been doing salt rinses (although only one a day... mostly due to just simply forgetting to do it more often), and I'm brushing as normal (taking care around the site), using mouth wash...etc.

The pain isn't agonising, but it's enough to wake me up in the night at least once, but I could tolerate it without the meds if I had to, so I'm pretty sure it's not an infection nor a dry socket (plus it's over 72 hours now).

Am I right in assuming it's most likely just due to trauma of the gums? She was working pretty hard on getting the tooth out and as I said, it took about 30 minutes!

Cheers,

Phil

I've had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled out a few months ago, and while I've heard that the length of pain can vary, it definitely shouldn't be so long that you run out of prescription painkillers. I myself only needed two or three each time (extractions took two appointments) before the pain became bearable enough to not need them. Sitting up while I slept seemed to help some, though it was annoying to try and sleep that way. During the day it helped that the painkillers made me ever so slightly woozy, so it took some attention off the pain!

As for sharing wisdom teeth horror stories, for one of mine the dentist had to literally grab hold of my head with one arm as he pulled it out! The sound, feel, and pain still scares me, though the head-grabbing part leaves me undecided between horror and laughter.

Hope you feel better soon!
