partial success

Hi all

Had my teeth sorted out last night - last 4 lower extractions plus stitches to be taken out in 10 days time and lower immediate fitted. However, whilst I was not expecting the world, my mouth is so small and I curently look like a hamster, where the outside bit of the denture is filling out my face big time. The problem I think is the back side flaps are too long and are stopping me from eating or drinking properly. They also annoy me when swallowing. I was planning to go back to work on the front line on Tuesday but cant do it like this, it feels awful - just a mouth full up with large lump of plastic.

Congratulations on getting through it. You don't seem to be giving yourself a pat on the back but you should. You got through it! Your partials will probably have to be adjusted to be more comfortable once the swelling has gone down. It will probably look and feel better in a few days as the swelling goes down anyway!

Thanks. If only they were partials. They are a complete immediate lower denture.

Hi Bertie - congratulations on getting through this !!
Is the "hamster look" due to the actual denture, or is it because you're still swollen? If it's the latter, you could try some arnica cream to help with the swelling (I take it though that the remaining 4 teeth were at the front?). Most people do find that dentures feel bulky the first few days; however, if you are quite certain that they don't fit right, don't hesitate to call your dentist. It can often be very easy to trim back bits that are annoying you, so maybe those back side flaps can be reduced enough to make things more comfortable. If you're due to go back to work on Tuesday, it would be good to see her either tomorrow or Monday. I hope the problem can be sorted out asap

Yes the hamster look is due to the denture. I took it out this morning for the first time and the relief was indescribable. At each side of the back, the dentist had shaved some off as the denture was too big in the first place - not her fault I know. However, she has left some very sharp edges on each side. I have now caught a cold,so hubby is taking it too her this morning to get her to sooth it off, and make an appointment for me to get her to check the fit with me again. The sides IMHO are too long, which makes the denture push out the front of my chin, and the "wings" or flaps - i.e. the thickest bits are forcing my cheeks to puff out big time. If these things could be correct, I think it probably would be "doeable"

Thanks for the "respect" guys. To those of you who are like me - a dental phobic - make no mistake I was visibly shaking all through the treatment - I am no hero. It is something that has to be done, some way or other. I may be having my top ones removed and a denture in there at some time - not for a good while yet I hope, but one thing I would consider for next time - if there is one, is oral sedation. I think this is really the best choice if you can't handle it any other way too.

Hi all

hubby took the denture back to the dentist on Saturday and under much duress, she shaved off quite a lot. I appreciate that I should have been there, but I knew exactly what was needed. Result is a much more comfortable fit than before, but more tweeking is needed, particularly on my right side where a large piece of plastic seems to going almost underneath my tongue and is making me feel sick. I will take it along to her next Monday when I have the stitches out, where hopefully she can make some more refinements. Luckily my lower teeth are virtually unnoticeable so I can go for most of the time without wearing this denture anyway

Glad to hear things are somewhat better . I hope things went ok for you today (were you back at work?)! And I really hope you'll be much happier come next Monday, when she'll be able to adjust them - fingers crossed

No I am not yet back at work. I hve been sick all week so far with an awful cold that started on Saturday/ I am still not happy with the denture. It is not lying flat either = lop sided. Also the underneath bit on one side is catching the edge of underneath one side of my tongue and the front edge behind your chin, where the divide for your tongue is, is too deep. When my husband tried to give me a peck on the lips yesterday, I yelped in pain. All the outside edges of it seem "rough/dryish". I have tried wearing it and the most so far is five hours, then I end up starting to chew it, then it starts to move ugh then I have to take it out. Eating with it in at present is a definite no no/ Jusr a mourhful of plastic that makes me feel literally sick. How I am going to work with it in I do not know. At this time of year, I have to talk non stop all day both to people in person and on the telephone and I am quite stressed out about it all as I dont feel I can cope.

Incidentally I dont know if this is legal in UK but the dentist has refused to make a proper lower denture in due course because my bite is so poor. She says I need all the top ones out too and that is the reason why she would not make a proper lower denture only another immediate if required. Who is paying the money here? Surely I am the customer Seems to me what started out as a good relationship is starting to turn sour as far as I am concerned, or have I just got the wrong end of the stick and just being too impatient?

Hi

I phoned the dentist this morning to check on my appointment date as I thought it was incorrect - i.e. 12 days for stitches removal and I was told 10. Dentist happened to pick up the phone, and she said the date of Tuesday not Monday was correct. I told her I had not been able to wear the dentures much as I have been off sick from work all week coughing, sneezing etc. I reiterated to her that the denture is still not correct, but she constantly overrides most of what I say, stating that it is an immediate denture, and she will not make a proper bottom denture until I have all the top ones removed, owing to my bite. However, as a "purchase" it is not fit for the purpose. I have noted what is wrong with it - lopsided for starters, and managed to get this through to her, and she said when I go, we will have a look. I have done a small check list of 3 things that need attention. At the end of the day, immediates, whilst only the "rough" version, should be as good as they can possibly be, (I have heard of people liking them so much they stick with them) ,and these are definitely not. I have to talk all day long, so need them to be the best they can be so I am reasonably confident. She keeps on about Poligrip, but that is not the problem. The fit is the problem.

PS One good thing that has come out of all this is that I now have no fear of the dentist at all. Before, the mention of the word struck terror in my heart. Now the word "dentist" trips lightly off my tongue, I picked up the phone to call the surgery so easily, and even the forthcoming appointment holds no fear - a test of a good dentist is painless stitch removal I am told. I will make my judgement then
