Hello! I was wondering about how many years white composite fillings hold up before they have to be replaced. I have 5 of them that are along the gumline. Is there a chance they will last longer since they are not on the direct chewing surface? 4 are on back bottom molars, and 1 is on an upper top back molar. Thanks.

well from what i have read online it says they dont last as long . They said about 12 years for silver fillings and 8 for white fillings. BUT i have silver fillings that lasted for over 20 years in my mouth so it all depends. I recently had 6 white fillings done and I love them. The silver ones i had left had split my tooth and I an now have to get crowns on those teeth.

These are just averages, in practice they can last a lot longer depending on things like diet, how well they were done in the first place (white/composite fillings are more technique-sensitive than silver/amalgam fillings), habits like grinding your teeth, and so on. So there is a chance that they will last much longer than "average". Besides, "averages" may be based on a population of both dental practitioners and patients which may not be representative of *all* dentists and patients. As Gordon said in another thread, amalgam fillings can last 30 or 40 years, or even longer.

So there's no way of predicting after how many years a filling needs to be replaced :).

hell, 12 years average, even if that sounds low, is a good run! mine are just a month or 2 old, if that, and yes, im worried about maby having them needing replacement, but, thats years down the road (god willing) so, who knows.

if i can get 30 years out of them, and not need other ones, im a very happy guy.
