I'm very much fearing the dentists, obviously since I'm on this forum, but found one who is absolutely fantastic, I'd recommend him to anyone who has some kind of fear of the dentist.
I was there on Thursday to fix a broken filling, and had anaesthesia since I'm afraid of the pain. This dentist has some kind of syringe-free device that I've only read about before, it's like a pen-like gadget with a little needle, that sort of goes into the bone, and gives a more focused aneasthesia so you don't have your half face numb for the rest of the day (which is lovely!).
I found the whole thing VERY unpleasant, although I never have any problems even with the syringe. It hurt and I felt a lot of pressure and stinging especially at the end when the area should be numb. They were quite surprised about that, since most, if not all patients never feel a thing.
Also, I'm not even sure it kicked in properly, I did feel a weird sensation in my jaw so it must have been the medicine kicking in, but it was a different sensation than I've had before when they've used the syringe.
When he came near a certain part of the tooth, it hurt a lot, so he stopped (and he also said he didn't need to work on it any more), and I feel very comfortable with the fact that he stops as soon as I feel any pain, but I was wondering if the medication worked as it should??? It was only a very small filling on the surface so really I don't think I should have felt anything!
I'm not sure if I felt such a discomfort from the anaesthesia device only because the thing was new and unfamiliar to me, and because I was anxious, or because I'm "strange" in some way. What would I be supposed to expect from such a thing? Should it be completely painless??
This time it was ok, as soon as I felt pain my dentist stopped the drilling and it was over with anyway, but what if I need to do bigger work? He also said that this kind of anaesthesia wears off quite fast. What if it wears off in the middle of a procedure? What can have happened, since I felt pain? Too little anaesthetic? Anything else? I've never had problems with anaesthesia before (apart from not getting any, when I was a child) so this really worries me!
