Root Canal, Crown and Temporary Filling

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could answer a couple of questions I have?

I had a root canal performed and a temporary filling was put in place whilst I decided if I wanted the tooth to have a permanent filling or a permanent crown.

I then opted for a crown at another dentist due to cost. The whole process failed and I had to have the work completed again. Upon opening the crown to get to the root canal the dentist found cotton wool under the crown. I therefore have a couple of questions. Is it possible for the cotton wool, if it was placed in the temporary filling by the root canal dentist (the tooth being intact at this point), to have remained attached to the tooth despite the following dentist drilling and shaving the tooth down to a small stub in order to fit the crown?

Secondly, is it possible and best practice for a dentist to place a crown over a temporary filling thus locking the cotton wool and temporary filling under the crown?

My basic question is: whether the cotton wool could have remained in place from a temporary filling following the sanding etc of the tooth from a tooth to a stub? And whether the dentist, who must surely have seen the temporary filling including the cotton wool, was right to fit a permanent crown on top of this?

It does make sense I think I understand what you are asking. A permanent filling should have been place in the tooth before a crown is put on. A dentist shouldn't have left cotton wool in there.
