terrifed panicked really freaked out

been to dentis today after a lengthy gap of nearly 10 yrs since my las visit... and ive been in floods of tears because im so panicked of having to go back... found out ive to have 9 fillings done... cant beleive it im so upset that my teeth have gotten into this state... and to make things worse i was so panicked after check up that i dint make next appointment to start off process... i cannot get myself together im so panicked about having to go back.. ihad a few bad experience as a child, worst been carried by3 dentists at age of 4 into have a tooth out in james hospital... am terrified at the idea of the injection and the rest... anyone any ideas of what i shud do!!!!

Congratulations on overcoming your fear enough to go and see a dentist today.
Many, many people have bad childhood experiences which cause an on-going fear or maybe just suspicion of dentists and dental treatment but this does not mean things have not changed for the better in terms of practices and procedures (e.g. no one will force treatment on you as an adult - if they did you could sue for assault). Sorry to hear of that awful experience.

Nearly every poster on here comes to agree with the idea that the way to overcome your fear is to find a dentist you like and trust as a person, who you can then go on to like and trust as your dentist. The dentist-patient relationship is key.
Maybe the one you saw today will be able to help you cope with treatment, maybe not, but if your choice is limited because of needing an NHS dentist for instance, all is not lost either since you are entitled to painfree care.
With modern techniques, even the giving of the local aneasthetic can be comfortable so you may be pleasantly surprised. Have a read around the Common Fears section and then come back with any remaining questions/doubts and posters will support you on your journey, backed by sharing their personal experiences.

Remember you are more incontrol of the process than you think...you are an adult, if you are unhappy at any stage and the dentist cannot help you, you can just leave..no one can force you to stay. On that score you may like to try just one small filling to get your confidence up.

If you doubt the diagnosis of 9 fillings, did they show you the x-rays at all? Then it might be best to get a second opinion to be on the safe side.
