My dental phobia question is about the "dental assistant".
Almost a year ago, I had a decaying filling removed from a tooth, and a new crown installed.
While sitting in the chair in the dental treatment room, I briefly heard drilling noises, and then the dentist quickly left the room. A dental assistant entered the room, and that is when the torture began.
For almost 2 hours, the dental assistant constantly violently poked my gum. The dental assistant was supposed to have been installing a temporary crown. The painful experience was AWFUL, and I was near death, due to the torture. While in the treatment room, I was finally able to get to my phone and dial 911, but I was too weak to say anything. Then the dentist made me wait more than 3 weeks before installing the permanent crown. The pain that I endured during those 3 weeks was debilitating and exhausting. Because of the physical torture that I received from that dental assistant, I was unable to work, and spent those 3 weeks mostly lying in bed with tremendous pain, and I barely had the physical strength to return to the dentist to get the permanent crown installed. After the permanent crown was installed, the pain in my head then began to become less painful, and since then, I have been able to begin healing from the torture of that dental assistant. I still have a low level of constant gum pain from the torture I received.
Privately, in my mind, I have amazement, anger, and hate towards that dentist, for allowing the incompetent and evil dental assistant to enter my dental treatment room. I had paid that dentist 50% more than normal so that I would be given tender loving care. Instead of being cared for, I was treated like disposable trash.
During the torture session, while sitting in the chair in the dental treatment room, I asked the dental assistant how many years of job experience she had, working as a dental assistant. She told me she had 3 weeks of experience.
That unfortunate dental situation occurred more than 9 months ago. I complained heavily about that dental clinic. The result of my complaints was that nothing was illegal==.
A physician assistant is required to have a college degree, and then complete a 3-year physician assistant program, and then pass an exam to be licensed. In contrast, a dental assistant has very little schooling, if any. The occupation of incompetent, untrained "dental assistant" is outdated. I feel that a dental assistant should be required to have an education and clinical training similar or equal to a physician assistant.
MY DENTAL PHOBIA QUESTIONS:
Why was that horrible situation allowed to happen? Why is a dentist allowed to have anyone else install a temporary crown? Why was that dental assistant situation allowed to occur? Why wasn't something done about it? What is an appropriate way to publicly complain about the perception of receiving inadequate dental care? Why is a dentist allowed to let unlicensed, incompetent, or untrained people stick their hands in my mouth? What can I do to create change in the dental profession?
