Tooth Abscess for 5 years

I've had a tooth abscess for approximately 5 years. Typically I would pop it when it flares up, but recently it doesn't seem like that helps. It's almost like there's scar tissue that has built up that no longer allows me to drain it. I'm terrified of going to the dentist to have it pulled, but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I'm worried it's going to spread into my face/jaw and cause sepsis. Any advice?
