Hi there,

I'm new to this site as I recently got the courage to start going back to the dentist after being too frightened to for 4 years after a bad experience. I've found all the advice people give to others to be really helpful at helping me finally get back in the dentists chair a few months ago!

However Next Friday (the 28th) I have an appointment to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed and I'm totally panicking! It's at an NHS sedation clinic (I'm from the UK) and it's being done with IV 'conscious' or otherwise known as 'twilight' sedation, mainly due to my extreme anxiety.

I was was just wondering if anyone else has ever had any dental work done using this technique? Does it really help calm your nerves? I'm so worried about pain and the feeling of choking that I really hope it helps! The clinic says on their website that the majority of people don't remember much of the procedure - is this true because it sounds too good to be?

Also im really nervous about the recovery, especially as it's all 4 at once. im worried about the pain and the possibility of my face swelling/bruising as well as the possibility of dry socket. Does anyone have any advice for quick recovery?

Im sorry for all the questions but right now I'm totally freaking out and it's still 9 days away. Right now I'm wondering how I'm going to get through it, so any advice would be really appreciated!

Hi
Well done you for taking that jump and going back to a dentist.

I don't have any experience of that kind of sedation, my dentist used nitrous oxide gas for my extraction yesterday, and I'm having mine done over two appointments.

But as for the healing part, you shouldn't worry about it. You will probably get a bit of swelling for the first day, I had mine done yesterday and the swelling has went down already, I only took painkillers once before the numbness had wore off and I haven't had any pain since. Take it easy afterwards, have a few days to yourself to relax and if your worried about the pain, take some painkillers afterwards. My dentist gave me a recovery leaflet which suggests using arnica drops to reduce bruising, maybe this would help you?

Hope all goes well for your appointment!
