Would you risk flying abroad with an abscess? please read thanks x

Hi everyone,


Firstly, so sorry if this sounds dramatic, but after falling ill abroad a while ago, I do have quite difficult anxiety when it comes to getting sick abroad. I've also had severe abscesses so know how unbearably painful they CAN be.


I attended the dentist 2 weeks ago and was advised I needed a large filling at the back of my teeth. I knew it had been sensitive for a while, but nothing major. Weirdly, I then started to get pain in my teeth and they tried to do the filling last week but couldn't numb the tooth enough. I went back today and was advised I have an abscess in the underneath of the tooth and need a root canal, which they can fit in in 3 weeks.


Only problem - I fly to Italy on Saturday which is a 2 hour flight away. I cried and immediately said to myself that I would cancel the flight. I explained the situation to my dentist and he prescribed antibiotics for 5 days - 4 per day. He wouldn't commit as to whether they would get me out of pain for the next couple of weeks, but said there is a good chance they may help.


The pain is intermittent at the moment, and controlled by clove oil and ibuprofen. Would you risk leaving the country and having a horrible abscess flare up if you were as anxious as me when it comes to this? I once had an abscess so painful I accidentally overdosed - anindication of how bad the pain was!!


Will the antibiotics reduce/keep away pain over the next few days for my trip? Would you risk it?

Why not try to get a cancellation appointment so the work can be done prior to the flight?? Tell him that it is important as you can't cancel the trip. He may even stay late one day for you (if you beg and he is really nice). Or see if some other dentist can do it for you right away.

Then there is still the issue of you might be in pain from the root canal itself... but ask for pain meds so you have them just in case.

Also, primitively start taking ibuprofen... its anti-inflammatory so it will reduce swelling and pain even leading up to the RCT and keep taking it after.

I bet the antibiotics will buy you some time if you aren't in pain already. But I understand your fear and i would be fearful as well. I agree with the idea of asking to be put on the cancellation list and to beg for sooner treatment!!
Good luck and I hope all goes well and you get to enjoy your trip to Italy. I am so jealous as the only other country I have been to is our neighbor, Canada.

If the tooth is sensitive to hot or cold then the antibiotics won't help but if it is a dull throbbing ache then they will help.
If it's the former then return to your dentist and get them to try again with lots of anaesthetic and kill the nerve so it stops hurting. Then you can enjoy your holiday.
