Earlier this week I saw a teenage girl that was referred to me in order to delay the extraction of a decayed wisdom tooth. This case was medically more complex due to her large venous complex in her face.
My point is that I walked into the room with a seated crying girl who would not look or talk to me.
She was there to have a large restoration(filling) done. Her mom and my assistant were also in the room and I had never met this girl before. What did I do?
First thing I said to her was that we were just going to talk then her mom interjected that she was there to get a filling done. I told mom hold on. After talking softly to her for awhile I finally got a few words out of her. We discussed what had happened elsewhere before and then came to an agreement on how I could proceed in little steps all with her approval. Of course that means that I had to perform at my best possible level and ensure she was continuously comfortable while also continuously observing her.
After about 45 minutes the treatment was completed and she was looking directly into my eyes talking to me and smiling. We both were happy and felt good about ourselves. She also has had problems with strong vaso vagal reaction when she has her teeth cleaned so we made plans to deal with that next time.
