Argh, its happened

Hi, i was here last week as id cracked my tooth.
Today, it crunched, and a chunk fell out!
I dont know what to do, it feels horrid.
It was hoing to be extracted via sedation but could still be 2 months away, and with Christmas coming, i dont want to risk pain...
So, how long does an extraction take??
Its my very back tooth (not wisdom)

Depends on many different factors, there's no way anyone can tell you. It would be worth phoning the sedation clinic and ask if you can have a short notice appointment, assuming you can arrange an escort at short notice?

We used to keep a small list of people who could fill a cancellation at short notice, it's very frustrating when you've got a big waiting list, somebody cancels at the last minute and you've got a sedation team and surgery sitting unused...

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I think im going to have to wait for my sedation appointment as my local dentist cant fit me in till jan anyway.
Called the sedation dentist and they have nothing about me so im guessing the paper trail has not reached them yet.

Im just so paranoid that more will break off. Basicly its a tooth that was filled a few years back, it cracked down the inside center, top to bottom.
Then a corner came off from the crack to the outside corner.
Im really hoping no more comes away.
Am i right in thinking that the filling should hold the sides in and together? (Clutching at straws)

Hello Deano85,

People often worry about these situations. However, the fact that you have not had any pain from the broken tooth is encouraging. It is most likely, that it will not cause you any trouble in the next couple of months. Yes, a bit more may crumble, but as long as it is not hurting that should not be a problem.
When a tooth has has a large filling in it for many years the nerve inside the tooth shrinks away from it,so if it falls out there is often little or know sensitivity. In fact, the main issue tends to be when the sharp edges of the tooth rub against the tongue.
So in conclusion, it is likely you will be just fine over christmas. If you are still worried you could ask your dentist to place a temporary filling for you.
