Braces in university.

Is it common to see people walk around universities with braces on?

I finally mustered up the guts to see my dentist; and I wish I had gone earlier. I definitely don't need any tooth extraction but I will need braces, and university starts in 6 months or so for me- will I be the biggest dork in town or will there be more of my 'kind' walking amongst normal folks?

If you have a look around there are people of all ages and all walks of life with braces and I am sure there will be a fair few of your fellow students with them too.

I personally think braces can be quite sexy looking. On adults that is. They have become more of a "status" symbol lately as not everyone can afford the cost of the treatment so kids are more proud to show them off. There's always those clear ceramic brackets you can get, and there's also the tooth coloured arch wires which are available too to help make things blend in.

Just keep focused on how much nicer and straighter your teeth will look in a few months, and remember that it's better to base one's image on one's personality and traits than simply what you see on the outside. Judge a book by its cover, will they? If so, let them go read somewhere else!

I'm guessing you are in the UK?
I think a lot more people are taking the appearance of their teeth more seriously in the UK than ever before, so I doubt you will be the only one, far from it in fact. Here in the US having good-looking teeth is considered almost as important as any qualification when it comes to the workplace, and people will happily spend the same amount of money as they would on university in order to get them. My 40 year old boss now has braces (although not really for vanity purposes), and nobody gives him a second look.
