Calling the Dentist Tomorrow - Terrified After Bad Experience

I have severe gum disease, and I have been advised to have all of my teeth removed. I tried to get the work done last summer, but the experience was so awful that I told the dentist to stop, and I never went back. He tried to do all the extractions with local anesthetic only, but the numbing injections had me crying in pain (he didn't use any numbing gel, so I guess that didn't help), and when he tried to pull a tooth, it felt like he was ripping out my palate. I ended up telling him to get away from me, and then I threw up in his garbage can.

An oral surgeon is going to sedate me and do the work while I am out, but I don't have the money to do the work right now (it will cost $4,000 out of pocket). I was trying to bide my time until I could save up, but now my front tooth is so loose that it is hanging sideways and making it difficult to eat or talk. In about 2.5 weeks, I am going back home to visit my family after not seeing them for two years. I don't want to go home with a snaggletooth and a speech impediment, so I am going to make an appt. tomorrow (with a different dentist). My hope is that they can pull the loose tooth and make me a partial so that I don't have to go around lisping. It is technically a waste of money to pay for a partial when I know I will need a full set of dentures at some point, but it's worth it to me to pay a few hundred dollars to not have a big gap in my mouth when I travel.

I am not worried about the extraction at all; it is the injections I am worried about. Just thinking about how bad they were makes me cry. The whole thing was just awful. Wish me luck when I call tomorrow!

I could not get an appt. with the dentist I wanted to see, so I searched for emergency dentists in my city. A dental practice with good reviews can fit me in at 8:00 tomorrow morning. Not a moment too soon! This loose tooth is now hitting my tongue and making it very difficult to talk, eat, and drink.

So sorry to read about your experience with that dentist back then! I thought numbing gel was a standard nowadays.. and checking your gums to make sure you are really numb as well..
How are you doing now? Have you been able to see the dentist? Hope they were kind and looked after you well..

Well, my tooth fell out by itself at 10:30 the night before my dentist appt. So I saved $150 and didn't have to have any local anesthetic! The bad news is that they can't make me a denture/flipper before my trip, so I'm going to have to visit my family with a big hole in my mouth.

This sounds quite bitter sweet.. I wished you were able to get the flipper. Would trying a different dentist be an option? Maybe there is a place that can fit the flipper for you before you go on your trip?

I wish I could get it done, too, but they'd have to pull three more teeth (they are loose, so they can't support a flipper or denture). I don't think it's wise to get dental work done and then go 2,000 miles from home where I don't have a dentist and might not be able to get assistance if I have a complication. I will just wait until I come back.

They were SUPER nice, though. I am okay with going back to them for the extractions and teeth cleanings.
