Can crown be removed?

Can my permanent crown with temporary cement be removed for root canal (or gums) to heal? I had a crown prep that then required a root canal so the crown was taken off and put back during the 2 stages of root canal. The crown was never comfortable and seems too large and I have been very sore along the back gum line of the crown and side of my tongue since this all began. (2 months ago) I feel the root canal was successful because the constant pain is just soreness around the gum line and tongue - the tooth (crown) is ok and I can chew on it. My dentist adjusted it twice but my gut is telling me the crown is off. Can I ask him to just remove the crown and see if this heals? I understand I might eventually need a new crown and am willing to take on that expense but is it possible for the crown -prepped, root-canalled "stump" to just breathe for awhile? This is #14 and RCT was finished 3 weeks ago.

yes but the crown shouldn't be a problem.
A crown will be a problem if...
too fat
too far under the gums
too tall (in the way)
Open contacts between the teeth so food impaction occurs

Thanks-If I look in a mirror the crown extends way out in the back than the other teeth so wouldn't that be too big?
