I lost a composite filling two years ago and the front of the tooth was still intact, unfortunately last week it loosened and the dentist extracted it, he said that the root is still there and will need to come out...I need to know if I can leave it in as don't want to put myself though painful oral surgery unnecessarily , and to be honest I do nt trust dentists, any advice would be welcomed

I have some roots left behind after extractions.

A lower wisdom tooth extraction 35 years ago
Upper 2nd molar extraction 16 years ago. I didn't know about this retained root until recently and on a recent xray it is enormous it is lying diagonal between the teeth either side of it and must be about 10mm long.
I also may have a piece of root left behind when my upper 2nd molar on the other side fractured and was extracted 12 months ago or so the dentist says, he often mentions my sinus as I get some upper gum and cheek pain and has mentioned referring me to a specialist but like you none of these roots are causing any pain.

My feeling is if it isn't causing pain then leave well alone. :):)

I had a root left behind for about three years, never had any trouble with it. My dentist extracted it when she had to extract the adjacent tooth, it came out easily enough without any surgical techniques being needed.

Many thanks for for this, I think I'm just going to leave it alone
