Chrome vs Acrylic

Could anyone tell me anything about chrome dentures as opposed to the usual acrylic please.

Only thing I've read is that they're thinner any other pluses or minuses?

Hi Rubyshoes,

If you have several teeth remaining, chrome dentures offer huge advantages over plastic dentures:

• They are thinner - so feel less of a mouthful.
• As they are stronger, they can often have the palate open, which people say, allows them to enjoy their food more.
• The retaining clasps are much more effective than those on plastic dentures, so chrome dentures feel much more secure and move around less.
• They can share the load between your remaining teeth and the gums, and this stops them stripping the gums away from your remaing teeth.

On the other hand:

• They are more expensive.
• They take longer to make.

Thanks drhirst how about if you don't have any teeth remaining? Are they not so good then?

With no teeth they still have the advantage of being much stronger so useful is someone keeps breaking their plastic denture when biting.
They can be made thinner than plastic which some patients appreciate. However, they cannot be rebased so might not last as long - having said that rebasing is never as good as remaking a denture.

Personally, I only make chrome full dentures if the patient keeps breaking a plastic one, which is very rare.
