My appointment is at 9:45am with surgery at 10am.

The oral surgeon told me nothing after midnight, but small sips of water to take a xanax an hour before is ok.

however ive read ppl on here and read articles thats said no food 6 hours before and only clear liquids 2 hours before is ok.

the food part i think ill be ok with but the liquid part…not so much.

ive read the 8 hour rule/nothing after midnight is based off of data for GA from the 50s and new studies have found 6 hour for food and 2 hour for liquid is ok. Which is it?

In the UK, it's common for dentists to recommend that people have a light meal, such as some soup or a piece of toast with spread an hour or two before their appointment. This is assuming that the sedation is single-drug midazolam IV, which is by far the most common form of IV sedation in the UK.

In the US, using several drugs is quite popular, so the rules may be different depending on what is being used. So to be on the safe side, it might be best to follow your oral surgeon's advice... even though it's likely perfectly safe to follow the newer rules that you came across. You could always print out the newer studies and leave them with your oral surgeon for their perusal - maybe future patients will benefit ?

i just got off the phone with a nurse through my health insurance and she said the 8 hour/midnight rule is a bit outdated and that she did research on it through the hospital she worked at. The 6/2 rule is better but she said to follow what the surgeon said.
I will probably just have a few more sips of water, to be honest. Its not like im going to have a huge meal at the 6 hour mark ?

With my previous dentist it was 8 hours no food or drink other than a sip of water with medication. Same clinic, new dentist who works with an anesthesiologist and he follows the 6/2 rules. The day of my appointment the doctor even gave me something to drink that was more than a sip of water with the pill they gave me a few minutes before IV sedation.

To be the safest, I would say follow the guidelines they gave you. They could decide to cancel the appointment if they figure out you didn’t follow the guidelines.
