So...I have a tooth that was filled about 6 yrs ago (white composite) which has been really sensitive to sweet stuff for awhile now (at least a couple months) but at my last appt the dentist took xrays and poked at it and deemed that it was still "ok" but noted a tiny crack and wanted to watch it. It's been about 4 months since that appointment and the other day (not thinking) I was sucking on a lollipop and when it got really tiny I bit the rest off of the stick (not wise on my part, I admit) but everything seemed fine. Later that night I ran my tongue over that tooth after experiencing a little sensitivity and felt a jagged edge/groove toward the rim of the tooth that faces an adjacent tooth (it's the second molar from the back). The crack is in a sense between two teeth...it's on the inside edge of a tooth closest to the tooth next to it...not ideal. Using really creative mirror angles I can see there is a defined crack right through the middle between the two cusps and breaching the center but not quite meeting the center (I believe a filling used to occupy that area). The crack looks like it goes all the way through the tooth (in terms of depth-surface to gum line...) but I can't imagine I did THAT MUCH damage without realizing it??? unless the filling went all the way through at one point and maybe came out entirely?
Anyway here is my question...my next appointment is in mid-September and as of right now I don't really have any symptoms/pain... but I want to know if it's "Ok" to wait 9 weeks and what the consequences may be if I wait that long...in other words would you consider this a dental emergency if I have no symptoms? Should I move up the appointment? I don't know what to do but am concerned about further decay/infection risks and such. I don't want this to turn into a root canal or something by neglecting it but I don't wanna move up my appt unnecessarily. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!!!
