D-Day: Oct 19th

So on the Oct 19th I’ll be having 15 extractions, some of them horrendously broken and rotten as I’ve dodged this for so long.

There’s a few that concern me but the one that worries me most is the upper left wisdom tooth.

It’s that badly rotten/broken only a small part sticks out, there’s only gum at that back of the tooth, which is swollen (think it’s infected as it hurts to touch plus when I press only slightly against what remains of the tooth it hurts like hell).

What worries me most is when looking in the mirror, even when pulling my mouth/lip to one side I can’t see the remainder of the tooth, so how will the surgeon be able to see or extract it?

Furthermore, because of the way the tooth has broken/rotted, the tooth isn’t ‘pullable’, or grabbable if that makes sense.

I’m absolutely terrified.

First off this is such a huge brave step and one , once it is over you will be relieved. But to think about it ahead of time and all the details and what ifs and that can be anxiety producing for sure and can be quite scary to think of. Usually the worst part is the thoughts before hand. You said surgeon , so are you going to an oral surgeon to do this? have you had a consult or met with them yet ? The good thing is even when we don't understand and see things our dentists and surgeons have so much schooling and practice and tools and know how to take care of us and help us along and the best thing we can do is express our fears and concerns ahead of time. And if you feel uncomfortable with their demeaner or the way they are treating you before hand you may want to consider a second opinion and find someone you are comfortable with .This is will go along way in your treatment.

Dear StHelensFan,

you might be surprised, but teeth do not get pulled, they get losen and taken out. Broken teeth are not a complication, your dentist will be able to get them out anyway.

Hi I have the same issue. I need two teeth extracted on the 27th of this month. One is the same broken at the gum line. When I got my bill it said 'extraction' and 'surgical extraction'. I talk a lot to a boy in my work who is in his final year of dentistry at university. He said most likely it would be surgically removed. They would make a small cut in the gum to be able to get to the tooth. Don't worry though you should not feel a thing. Like my dentist says every time I say will this hurt. 'They are not here to butcher you or hurt you'. You'll be totally fine. If you have a dentist you trust then trust that you are in great hands and will be comfortable. It's easier said than done but it's very true

i also had 15 extracted in june (twinsies! 2 were broken down to the root, one of which was my upper right wisdom tooth. the other one was in a weird spot, behind one of my front teeth and growing out of the roof of my mouth. i can't tell you what tool my dentist used (kept my eyes screwed shut the whole time b/c i didn't want to see sharp metal objects but they both came out in seconds.

i was terrified too but my imagination in the days and hours leading up to my d-day (which was june 6 and i just realized that's LITERAL d day! ha!) were 100x times worse than the actual extractions. the relief when it was over was worth everything.

Yes an oral surgeon will be doing the work.

I know broken teeth aren’t a problem but this is a broken upper wisdom tooth, it’s the way it’s broken, there’s only a bit of it visible and at the back it’s just gum, so there’s nothing to grab hold of to wobble it out of loosen it, plus it’s way back in my mouth and not even visible.

As for some of the others, I have a tooth growing out of the top part of my upper gum right underneath my lip that is broken (believe it’s a supernumerary tooth), terrified of them cutting the gum to take it out.

Then I have 3 broken teeth on the lower right side, they’ve been broken for so long now it’s hard to see where one tooth starts and the next ends, plus on the inside of some of them it feels like I’ve lost some gum and the sockets have come through and been damaged due to all of the infections, the oral surgeon said the gum will curl back over after they’ve been extracted but I’m a little sceptical.

Hope it goes ok,I wouldn't worry how they'll do it they have their ways (some things are better off not knowing) will you be sedated?

Yes, GA, never had an op before, never even had a filling before so absolutely terrified.

I've had GA twice (+due a few more) there's no way I could have done it awake or even semi awake if your that anxious its prob better to be fully knocked out,I totally get how nervous you are tho its a big thing. Keep us updated when your feeling up to it.

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that you find it hard to trust in the abilities and knowledge of your oral surgeon. It sounds like you believe that the situation with some of your teeth is maybe too complicated to get them removed safely. May I ask you what do your fear tell you could happen? And can you think of something that would help you to feel more confident about the procedure?

To your worry about the surgeon not seeing the tooth: he has your x-rays, which is a map of your teeth. He is trained to see exactly where the tooth is and how to get there smoothly. Also, dentists (and surgeons) spend awful lot of time studying the anatomy. Your surgeon knows every little muscle, nerve or bone that is anywhere on your head so he will know where the tooth is. Also he spends a lot of time seeing healing gums of different people after different treatments so if he says that your gums will curl back, then chances are that that is what will happen. If there is anything that you would like to know before the procedure gets done, may I encourage you to ask the surgeon and allow him to explain what he would like to do?

Sorry I didn’t update the thread earlier, been busy, it didn’t go ahead as they want me to get rid of this cold I’ve had for a few weeks, said they’ll get me back in in 2-3 weeks.

That's such a shame, nothing worse than building yourself up for something and it not going ahead.
