Hello, this is my first post on this forum, although i have been reading and following for years! Earlier this year i plucked up the courage to register with a dentist, had my first visit in 17ish years, and was referred to the special care dentist hospital because i needed quite a bit of work and was so so nervous. first visit to the hospital was just a check up, agreed that 6 molar and pre molar teeth needed to go, 3 fillings needed to be done, and a good scale and polish. The extractions and fillings where planned to be done under sedation. in between then and the appointment, the pain got so bad i went in as an emergency and got two teeth out with just numbing and no sedation. it wasn't an easy thing to do, it was very unpleasant, they were students and they did their best. Wednesday just gone was my appointment for the other 4 under sedation, i went with my lovely dad, and after meeting with the dentist and her team, having a good conversation, i felt comfortable (ish) to have a go without sedation. I was told that at any point if it was too much they would sedate me. I got through the full procedure with no sedation, two of my teeth were broken badly and infected, the other two were a bit stubborn. The dentist was lovely and calm. it took about an hour and a half in total. and a lot of numbing and needles. now i fully expected to be tender afterwards, and i was (all the extractions where on the same side). i followed all the instructions with the salt mouth wash and gentle brushing. soft foods etc. but over the last 3 days, i have had an ache deep in what feels like my jaw muscle. im sure its not the extraction sites, it feels like were some of the needles have gone in. but its so deep in far back its difficult to tell. Is this normal? I mean, that part of my mouth has taken a battering, i get that, and am fine about it, but is this ache ok? I go back on the 18th October for a deep scale and polish (lets not even talk about that just yet) and then on the 30th October for the three fillings on the other side (gulp), and dont want to be going back with soreness. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks Vicky x

Is it difficult to open? If so, it could be trismus. OTC ibuprofen 800mg three times/day (as long as you dont have a history of ulcers, kidney problems, and can tolerate the medication) should help and doing cold and warm compresses to the area may help with soreness. Going back in several times to numb the area sometimes traumatizes the tissue. This will heal up with time. It sounds like you have a caring dentist so if you have any questions it never hurts to call and go in for a quick post op appointment. Congratulations on being done with the first step!

thanks very much for the reply, its not really difficult to open, just a bit stiff. It would make sense that the area is a bit traumatised. I will allow time to do its thing.

first off you need to give yourself a huge pat on the back for no sedation! you must be so proud and pleased, im no dentist but i would say its more than likely down to having teeth out, if you are concerned about anything, give the dentist a call. well done you!!
