hey guys ive been a long time lurker of this forum but just recently ive plucked up the courage to go to a dentist and try to start to get somewhere with getting some treatment on my teeth.

ive suffered from depression, anxiety and panic attacks for a few years and ive been on 30mg paroxetine (paxil for the usa viewers) for all that time aswell.so as you can see it took a lot for me to go to see the dentist as i get so anxious and scared of the build up before going to see him.
when i sat in the chair he made me feel very comfortable and at ease which was really nice, after i had told him about my mental health problems and what it had took to get me in the chair.
after examining me i asked him what i need done and he said i would need 14 teeth out all together including a few wisdoms.
then he told me that i was beyond his experties as i needed a lot doing and it would be very stressful with what is wrong with me aswell.
so he said the best thing to do is go to birmingham dental hospital get a check up,xrays and so on and then they would be able to tell the full extent of my treatment as i might need more than 14 out.he said it would be better for me to go there and be sedated and have them all out at one time.

my questions are these,

would i be ok being iv sedated when i am on anti depressants (30mg paroxetine before bed every night)?

does it matter that i smoke,as i know when general anestetic is used they ask you to stop smoking as it can cause complications while you are asleep?

if i have all the 14 teeth out at one time how am i going to eat as there will be 2 back bottom teeth and the rest all top teeth that will need to be removed,im scared of the amount of pain after the extractions and not being able to chew food for being nearly toothless.

im so scared,i want the sedation because i want it to be over and done with, without feeling anything but im scared of not being able to know whats going on and being in control,id prefer the sedation over having them out with just the novacain needles but i still cant help but worry.

someone help please,thanks

Sorry,I can't answer your main question but wanted to try to put your mind at ease over the latter.
I had all my top teeth removed two weeks ago and an immediate denture put in.At the bottom I have one back tooth on the left and two on the right(one of which needs to be removed along with one of the side/front ones). The plan so far is that I'll keep my seven front bottom ones also and in six months get a lower partial denture.

I was absolutely terrified about the procedure.I thought I'd be in excrutiating pain for weeks after.Truth is I wasn't!Even directly after the treatment it wasn't any more than a dull pain...far easier to deal with than toothache,Eating's taking a bit of getting used too but I've already found I can eat cold sweet yogurts etc without my top teeth being in agony!
There are lots of journals on here by people that have dentures...I wish I'd found them before I had mine done.Although I doubt it would have taken all the fear away,I think it would have helped to ease it just a little.
All the best and hope someone can answer your question about tablets and IV sedation.xxx

thanks for the fast reply, how many teeth did you have out in one go then?
as im just worried about the after pain while recovering after having the 14 or more out at one go,i didnt know whether to have them out like that or do it in 2 or 3 visits like say have 5 at a time taken out but then ive got the nerves of going back again to have the rest out if i do it that way.
im quite fussy with my food as it is,ill only eat unhealthy hard foods like burgers, chips, chicken and stuff.
the only soft food i like that will be friendly on my gums would be the pasta that comes in a bag from the supermarket, like the supernoodles.
im worrying incase once ive had them all out at one time that i wont be able to eat

I smoke cigarettes and I was put under IV sedation with no problems. I smoked a cigarette that morning around 9 AM, but didn't smoke again before my appointment at 4:30 PM.

Hi Rossy.I just had a recount and it was fourteen I had removed...thirteen remaining uppers and one lower.

In reality,I doubt you'll be eating burgers straight after, but my guess is that if a dentist has said you need fourteen extractions,it's only a matter of time before they give up on you anyway!:(
I had so many foods that I couldn't eat before treatment, either because they'd hurt or I'd worry about crunchier stuff breaking off yet another tooth.
It's a slow process learning to eat again, but I know once I get there I'll be able to eat a far huger range of foods than I did before.I've mentioned her before, but my Mum can even eat toffee!!!;)
I've been mainly eating soup and yogurt, but have also made progress with slightly more substantial stuff...had noodles with stir fried beef last night.Afraid it was a bit too chewy but had I of slow cooked it I think I'd have managed it.
The after pain was honestly nothing like I'd expected it to be,more a slight dull ache that was easily dulled even more by popping regular painkillers.I thought I'd have to make provisions for someone to take the kiddies to school,at least for a few days.I was fine and think if I worked then I'd have been able to go back by the Monday.

Have a read of some of the journals, most of them you can tell by the title are about extractions/dentures.It's all very well me saying it was OK for me...get a few more words of encouragement!;)xx

Hi rossy, if he doesn't pick up on the question, private message Stress Doc a psychologist, he is our resident expert on all thing medications especially anti-depressants.

You'll want to curb down the smoking for after the prodecure, it increases the chance of getting a dry socket, before should be no problem but if you can cut way back 24 hours before it would be a good thing.

14 teeth out doesn't hurt 14 times worse than one, I had 4 at once, 2 were a bit achey after, the other two I didn't feel at all. because they were upper and lower left and right I did the soup, jello, yogurt and eggs for about 2 days.

If it were me, I would do them all at once, just one procedure and one recovery time.

The iv sedation is wonderful- let the experts be in control.....

I hate to be a killjoy, but I wouldn't offer you IV sedation for your treatment, the results can be unpredictable on somebody with your mental issues.

I would happily do the treatment for you under general anaesthetic though... which is probably why your dentist referred you to the hospital clinic?

wasnt people dying in the dentists chair through having general anaesthetic, and thats why most places stopped using it in the uk?
how cum u said that gordon,is there any risks involved with people with mental heath issues?

Yes there are some risks in GA, which is why they aren't done in dental surgeries but done in hospitals by consultant anaesthetists only... but in your OP you said you've been referred to a hospital?

It's not that it's risky to your health to use IV on a case like yours, but the results can be very unpredictable, by which I mean that the sedation can have a sort of paradoxical effect and can make you very agitated and upset.
