Hi My name is Shirley and I live in United Kingdom.

I have had a fear of the dentist for as far back as I can remember but visited them as regular as I could until unfortunately due to a genetic pre-dispostion and a 15 year smoking habit (I gave up 5 years ago-smoking that is-) I found myself with peridontal disease that resulted in the loosening and very wide gaps in most of my existing teeth and very blcak fillings at the back with many holes and gaps.

My fiancee kindly offered to treat me to cosmetic surgery as he does contract IT work with a very good dentist whom I may add is the most wonderful empathic dentist I have ever came across Martin Cowan in Rodney Street Liverpool United Kingdom. (little plug there)

Anyway had 3 extractions and the rest filed down and 10 units put in on a temporary bridge ;D that has left me with a lisp and I have been an emotional wreck for 5 days since :-X-- I can't stop bloomin crying [smiley=frightened.gif]and have gone into a depression and I just cannot understand that the mouth looks wonderful and my smile is beautiful I am in absolute bits . I feel like S..t to put it mildly.

To top it all my mother is being an absolute unsympathetic ..... aswell but whats new there ??

I thought I may not stop crying this evening ... thanks for letting me vent and any support will be gratefully accepted,

Thank you in advance
Love

Hi Shirley,

great to hear you found a dentist you really like :)! I wasn't quite sure after reading your message what exactly depresses you at the moment - the lisp or something else? If it's the lisp, sometimes it can take a little while to adjust to a slightly altered bite, or all that might be needed may be a minor adjustment. Have you talked to your dentist about this yet?

Anyway - many thanks for joining and for your recommendation :) - and welcome [smiley=welcome.gif]!

Thanks for your reply letsconnect

Yes it is definately the lisp that is depressing me at the moment and I am all over the place too so I am probaly not making myself very clear.

I did read some information on your site with regards to the fact that because I was being such a good "39year old girl" in the dentists chair for an hour and a half whilst the work was being done that maybe it is a release because I was so brave. I am going back Wednesday to get it dealt with (hopefuly) I am sick and tired repeating myself to my children.

I have swung to anger today and I hate this emotion. :-[

Your crying is a release of all the tension, fear, whatever that you have felt in the past.

Most of your dental work is over right? You just have to get used to your new mouth!!!

How wonderful that you have such a fiance. He must love you very much to do what he did. And your wonderful dentist!!! How lucky is that? to find a guy so empathetic.

Honestly, once you finish all this, take yourself to your local place where they do facials, pedicures and manicures and treat yourself to a nice facial and other stuff (whatever you can afford).

You will feel so pampered and relaxed, you won't even remember why you felt bad.

Also, when you are alone in your flat, get some aroma candles and safely light them and kick back with a nice glass of wine, (if you do indulge), hug your boyfriend and just chill.

Nothing beats a good man or a good dentist.

that's my motto.

be well

Melody

The lisp is definitely something to ask your dentist about (and sometimes it just takes a little practice to compensate for small changes in bite and it might go away automatically).

As Melody said, maybe the emotional turmoil you're experiencing right now is at least partly due to all the stress and strain over the last while - it sounds like maybe you've been trying really hard to pull yourself together over quite a period of time and all that tension needs some release. It might be an idea to go with the flow and have a good cry to get rid of that tension, and seek emotional support from close others :).

Let us know how you get on?
