Extractions, how many at a time

I have about 5 or 6 broken molars, and they need to be pulled. However, having them done at once is overwhelming, since they are all over my mouth. I could handle three. Will they make me get them done at once?

Having 5-6 done does not mean 5-6 x more pain. I had 4 done at the same time last year, all four corners. Depends on how complicated/surgical -non. the broken molars were a piece of cake.... My preference was to just get it over with, one day recovery and I was fine.

Twenty-something years ago I had 7 or 8 molars which were down to the gumline and had to come out. My dentist dealt with them one quadrant at a time, which suited me. I think this was partly because of the time allotted for extractions under the NHS appointment system, i.e. 45 minutes - by the time he had finished extracting and suturing there wouldn't have been time to move to the next quadrant. Also from a phobic point of view it was easier for me to deal with than the idea of having the whole lot done at once !

My dentist obviously knew exactly what he was doing, as I only ever once had to take any painkillers after the extractions

Oh I went to sleep- IV sedation, being phobic, that's the only way to go for me. Took a little over an hour, two were surgically removed but no sutures required. One was a wisdom tooth.

Most people just like to get them over with rather than to draw it out over a period of time. I've done full mouth extractions using local anesthetics only (a LOT of local). Having said that, they can't make you do something you're not comfortable with so if you'd like to split it up just talk to your dentist.

If I decided to split them up, how long before the second time?

I had every tooth in my head pulled in one sitting. But like RP, I had IV sedation. As non-fond of going to the dentist as I am..I would always take the one sitting route.

As long as you wanted really, ideally about 3-4 weeks if you're having extractions on both sides done, so that the first side can heal up before you got the other side done.

I had 8 out at once with iv sedation back in June. I was eating normally in less than 2 weeks. Would definitely recommend having them done all at once. A few days of Nurofen and a bit of jaw ache, but nothing as bad as i was expecting.

I too would encourage you to have the iv sedation since you are having more than 2 removed at once. I've heard of people having ALOT of them out at once. My uncle had about 7 out at once.
