My #14 upper back tooth developed an abscess in it and now I have to have it removed and I’m super scared. I suffer from OCD and anxiety so I am super stressed and scared. It’s still a week away and I can barely eat and def cannot sleep. I’m not scared of the actual process of pulling the tooth out I’m scared of the needles and how many I will need. I’ve read I will need one on the roof of my mouth and I am so scared of that just reading it I get light headed. Is that something that will happen? Or is it just one shot to numb it up? My tooth is all broken on one side and feels kinda wiggly, barely but still. I also panic because I don’t like the feeling of being numb. Any advice or thoughts would be great.

Dear Melzer,

tooth extractions are probably on the list of the most scary things that one can experience in a dental office but from reading the posts there I am sure that anything you can make up in your imagination will be worse than the real experience. The most of the people report that it was quick and not that bad at all.
The roof of your mouth - I asked my dentist about that once, told him about the horror stories I have heard, like it being the most painful thing etc. and he just shouted: NO! with a smile. He said that's not true and it's not that bad. And he must be right because there are posts of people here who got through that and said that it wasn't bad at all.

I hope you have a great dentist you trust and feel comfortable with and if you have any concernes, maybe you could ask for a consultation about this so that they can put you at ease and take your worries away.

Hi there,

I had one molar extracted a few months ago (3rd from the back) and I was petrified. I needed 2 injections in total I think and one of them was in the roof of my mouth but it was actually the nicest of the two. That doesn’t mean the other was really bad or anything, actually they were both completely manageable and without much pain at all. They felt like a little prick. The one in the roof of my mouth was not as deep which is probably why it didn’t cause as much discomfort but that’s what I’d call it, discomfort.

Good luck! I was scared of the injections too and it was such a relief to get them done because then I just sat back with my eyes closed and relaxed. I promise you it was not as bad as I thought. And once the slight discomfort is out of the way from the injections you will not feel any pain at all. Just slight pressure from the tooth being removed. I actually still felt something so asked for my dentist to administer more anaesthetic but as I was already pretty numb I did not feel this injection at all. So don’t be scared to ask for more if you need it. I had a filling a few weeks before my tooth extraction and still felt slight pain after the injection but was too scared to ask for more pain relief because I thought I’d have to have another injection but I regret that because it wasn’t worth being in pain when I wouldn’t have felt the next injection anyway.

Keep us updated!

I had an adult tooth removed in 2006 was quite easy, he put this stuff on my tooth, waited in the waiting room (I was the one one upstairs at the time) bit of wiggling and it was out.

I had baby teeth was removed which was awful done at dental hospital not due to decay, to make for adult teeth to come through properly, first time was put to sleep, year later two rounds of local, all done dental hospital, blood all over.

I had a bottom molar (tooth #18) removed back in January that was abscessed after going through a course of antibiotics. The tooth was pretty badly decayed and broken and she had to cut it in half to remove it from my mouth. The only pain that I felt was from the numbing shot and even then it was more of a pinch and a slight "burning" sensation that only lasted a second or two.

It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and it lasted on 10 minutes, 15 tops and she was done. The longest part of it was waiting to be numbed up. Believe me, you'll feel much better once the tooth is out. After the hole closed up, it was so much better and I had no more pain. Previously, I had pain from that tooth for nearly two years and getting it taken out was the best thing that could've happened.
