I am totally embarrassed by my dental phobia. My teeth are in awful shape, previous treatment plans remain only partially completed, and my husband NEVER gets to go to the dentist because I take up all the resources we have available to us.

I am a grandmother, a professional, college-educated, etc., etc. But any hint of a dental emergency (and they always are) and I become a child again or something. I'm just flat scared. Scared, scared, scared.

Am I crazy or something? I want to fix this, but I've tried in the past, and I've fallen short. NOw here I am again. I have to go to the dentist for an emergency. I feel like I'll never fix this, never.

Hi grokmama:

Well I can't offer much advice but I just wanted to pop in and let you know that you're not alone. I too am a very intelligent, college-educated, professional adult but I turn into a total basket case when it comes to dentists. I would rather run naked through the center of town while passing a kidney stone than go to the dentist. Your fears are valid. I'm sorry you have this affliction as well. I hope all is corrected soon.

That helps. Seems like I run through "a tape" in my head in which I am "a big baby," and "irrational," and I'm going to "waste the dentist's time."

In addition to the terror, I am -- apparently -- inconsiderate! Sigh. Have appointment.

The 21st, 8 a.m. -- I will be sedated, and my wonderful daughter will interpret my odd noises to my dentist...
