Hi Brooke - I just had an extraction and bone graft on Monday this week done by an OS using IV sedation (not GA, just "conscious sedation"). I don't know exactly which drugs they will use to sedate you but I got a combo of anti anxiety meds, pain meds and sedatives. I was told I would be alert enough during the procedure to understand and follow simple instructions, but the last thing I remember is the Anesthesia Nurse telling me she was going to inject the anti-anxiety drug first and that I probably wouldn't see her again until recovery. The last thing I do remember is her saying "How does that feel?" after giving me the meds and I literally fell off into what felt to me like a deep, hard sleep. Extraction, bone graft very successful. I was very anxious and so happy when I woke in recovery to realize it was over!
I'd imagine your sedation experience may be very similar to mine. I was much more nervous than necessary and had no problems.
I've had similar sedation for medical procedures as well and have zero memory any of them. Also important to note that even if you have sedation, they do still numb the area in your mouth that they work on. You'll wake up tired, sleepy and numb. I had discomfort but no real "pain" following my procedure. Honestly...it didn't hurt and it still doesn't,..but the swelling causes some discomfort that I've relied on Ibuprofen to help with. Follow all after care instructions and keep your follow up appointments and you should be fine.
Keep your chin up, let them know if you're nervous and they should be happy to answer any questions for you. You'll be fine !!
