Going mad through pain.

Please help me. All my teeth are rotten due to having a big dental fear and not going to the dentists for 14 years.

I desperately need 2 wisdom teeth removed because they are massively decayed and there is only about a 1/3 of the crown left sticking out of the gum on both teeth. I have a referral to see the dental surgeon at the hospital but thats going to take a minimum of 4 months. I'm in AGONY and haven't slept now for 3 weeks. The problem is i need to have this done under sedation but the only clinic that does that around my way refuses to treat me as last time they extracted my molar i had a panic attack and they said i was a "difficult patient" and they would see me anymore.

I cannot bare the pain anymore. I'm taking co-codamol painkillers and they are doing nothing to ease the pain.

Hi sarah, Welcome to the boards.......

I'm sorry to hear that you're dentist wont treat you anymore due to panic attacks, and that you have to wait so long for an appointment at the hospital.

Instead of waiting, is there no way that your dentist may treat you sooner and perhaps prescribe a beta blocker, or diazepam to calm you beforehand?

I ask this, because I have to have ALL my treatment done under IV sedation, (including cleaning cos I'm such a wuss) but still need to take diazepam the night before, and on the morning of my appointment, due to panic attacks/anxiety.

In the meantime...... could you perhaps ask your doctor for a painkiller?? I was prescribed dehydrocodiene as a painkiller and it really worked and helped me sleep.

Well done on making the appointment!! I know that must have been really hard for you to do and is an amazing achievement

If you go back to the dental hospital then they should admit you straight away as an accident and emergency case. Alternatively you could try going to the accident and emergency dept. of an ordinary hospital. Going to your doctor sounds like a great idea too. I live in Ireland and normally doctors will not interfere in dentists buisness but  a while back i was in your position: 2 weeks of nurofen and no sleep and pain the WHOLE time. Eventually i went to the a&e of a nearby hospital one night and explained the situation. They seemed pretty blah about it but when i said the amount of time i had been on painkillers, the nurses eyes nearly fell out of her head. They wouldn't touch the tooth ( which was FINE   ) but did give me painkillers and an antibiotic , not a huge amount but enough to see me through until i got my courage up to go to the dentist.
