Have you experienced any gum problems such as loose teeth, pain or discomfort in your gums, receding gums, bad breath, red or swollen gums, or tooth loss? We are interested in hearing about the individual experiences of people with these symptoms.

We would like to invite you to take part in a study looking at the effects of gum health. The purpose of the study is to understand how gum health impacts on everyday life. Topics that would be covered include your experiences of the above symptoms, how noticeable they are and how frequently they occur, how you react to them, and any specific impacts they may have.

Responses from the research will help to better understand the wide range of effects and responses associated with these symptoms, and will be used to create a new measure of gum health.

Participation would involve a one off interview with a member of the research team on your experiences of gum health, that would last between 30-60 minutes (this may be longer or shorter at your discretion). Interviews will be arranged at a mutually suitable time and place, and all data will be fully anonymised. Travel expenses will be reimbursed, and everyone who attends an interview will be given a £25 honorarium (voucher) to thank them for their time. Unfortunately, we are unable to recruit members of the dental profession, or current or former dental students.

The study is being organised by Professor Sarah Baker, who is Professor of Psychology as applied to Dentistry, in the School of Clinical Dentistry. The study has received ethical approval from the University of Sheffield (Application 022394). This research is funded by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

Your participation would be greatly valued, and very much appreciated.

If you would like to take part in the study (and live in South Yorkshire and can travel to Sheffield) or receive more information, please first contact:

Tom Broomhead (researcher) – [email protected]

Thank you for your time,

Tom Broomhead
