Help please!!!! 72 hours since post extraction.

I had a very bad abcessed tooth that was taken out Monday afternoon of this week. All that was left of the tooth was cavity, most of it had broken off and was below the gum line. A dentist who I thought did an amazing job, seeing as how I was in and out so quick, with very little pain as embedded as that straight cavity was. It has been 72 hours offically coming up at 1 pm today on Thursday. I have done everything as instructed. Only eating Yogurt, soup, some scrambled eggs, only drinking water. I started salt water rinses after 24 hours and lightly brushing my teeth, ignoring the extraction site. No spitting. Just dribbling. I do not smoke. Barely drink. I did start my menstrual cycle the next day after extraction. I am not on any type of birth control. But I am scared now. I keep noticing the hole getting super small and have reached day three, as said before.. this afternoon. But I do not know if it is normal for an extraction to heal this quick. It is the bottom molar on right side, third one back. I was taking antibiotics prior to getting it pulled and up until Wednesday before being told if they were making me feel ill, by my dentist to stop taking them. As I have already been diagnosed with mild gastritis.Which makes taking anything for pain. Cause stomach discomfort. I did get a little food in there by accident while chewing on my good side after 48-hours. I was eating scrambled eggs and residue got caught in there. My dentist said this was okay though. As long as I continued my rinsing with salt. Since the tooth has been removed, I did not much the first 24 hours, having to go back to work by the 30th hour. But there has been no excessive bleeding. As the hole is getting smaller, I notice less food. Is this normal? I'm really scared now. I have no pain as I breathe in deep, just a little discomfort after salt water rinse. I only put half a teaspoon in glass of water each time. As my dentist said to do 4 times daily, mainly after eating. But I've never had dry socket before and I have had a molar removed before. Please, please someone help. It is my Dentist's Friday, and I work tonight. And I have a low tolerance to pain. Is it normal for an extraction to sometimes heal quickly? Even the gums look like it is turning very small and the blood clot is either sinking or rising.

I am new, and need desperate help. Thanks.

Hi welcome to the forum.

Don't worry you sound as if everything is normal and healing well. Everyone is different and heal at different rates. At 72 hours after extraction you are normally safe from dry socket. It takes about 6 months for the healing to be complete but we feel back to normal in a few days in some cases and after a couple of weeks in others. Carry on as you have been and you will be fine.

Try to stop worrying, if you do get really bad pain that keeps you awake or a bad taste then contact your dentist but I really don't think you will need to.

I went and talked to my dentist, he took an XRay and then cleaned it out with deluted listerine, told me to be patient as it is healing. That was this morning, and it just gradually keeps getting smaller as seconds go by, or so it feels. When you see it, you see a whiteish/grey layer beneathe some spit. Is this normal? Also it is uncomfortable because I feel the need to scratch it. I obviously never would, but I feel it. It is driving me nuts. I can't figure out if this is normal or not at almost four days? It is all normal and the itching just shows it is healing. You are fine.
