Help please injection fear

Please please please someone help me.

I went to new dentist as they said very good with nervous patients.

Had temp crown fitted but alot of pain so went back and it obviously wasnt in properly as another dentist knocked it into place and now its fine.

I go my new crown in couple of weeks. The injection wasnt too bad in gum on top jaw so am not too fearful of this again.

However I had filling done on lower jaw and it still hurts when I bite down hard so I will have to mention this when I go back. Problem is the injection in corner of my mouth to numb lower jaw was agony and I can't bear the thought of having that again.

Spent nearly 1k on this now and every time I go I have to take sedatives and have partner take me and travel 45 mins.

Am terrified of having that lower jaw injection again I really don't think I can do it. The thought just brings me to tears.

Do I go somewhere else and have the wand? Should I be due a refund as the filling has made no difference to my tooth pain?

What you described with the injection sounds really bad! I am wondering why is that - an injection shouldn't be that painful and you can have perfectly comfortable injections even without the wand.

Talk to your dentist, not only about the filling but also about the injection. Do you feel comfortable with your practice?

I told my dentist at the time it really hurt and he said it was because he had to go through the muscle. I since looked it up and he performed a procedure to do a block numb of lower jaw. I have never had such a painful injection before and never want to experience it again. The injection is the worst part for me.

I don't know how I feel about the new dentist now

I wonder if the dentist’s technique was off a little? Maybe he hit a blood vessel - I’ve heard that can happen and cause a zing. I’ve had blocks that I didn’t even realize had happened by the time the dentist was done with the injection. I’ve also had different dentists give painful block injections. I’m not a dentist, but I think it’s a matter of technique a lot of time. They can “miss”, give it too fast, or you might have unique anatomy. Do you feel comfortable asking them about it and voicing your concerns?

Your question about the refund should actually be a question about what's wrong with the tooth and how to solve it, since you are still in pain.

From your post I feel like you are not really happy about your dentist and with your experience about the injection, I wouldn't be either.
I am not very convinced about the explanation your dentist gave you about why the injection was so painful. There are a lot of posts about the problem with an injection into the roof of mouth, but all other injections should be painless. You can look at some posts from the lovely dentists that are around in this forum and they all say: with a good technique it's possible for the injections to be painless.

If I were you, I would find an another dentist. A one who you feel comfortable with. I would tell him or her about the filling and voice the concerns about the injection too and then look what they suggest.

Is it possible to ask for/take some kind of sedative before the injection so that you aren't really aware of it? I also had a terrible experience with corner lower jaw injection a few weeks ago. I had a premolar extracted. It was horrendously painful and seemed to go on forever. I thought the needle was going to come out the other side of my face and if not for the sheer terror of moving I wanted to just scream get it out!! I will never ever go through that again. Where I live they don't give any anaesthesia for "standard" fillings so I don't normally have to worry about needles, but for absolute certain I will be getting myself dosed up with something very effective if a needle is called for in the future.

Sorry for this painful experience. I think when you have those really hard experieces its hard to forget . I had an upper palatel injection like 10 years ago and I actually grabbed my dentist hand and pulled it out of my mouth. (Which I definately do not ever recommend) And he was usually awesome at shots.. no pain but letme know this was a hard one.. he was pretty decent about the whole experience but it definately is one where now if a dentist is goign to go anywhere near my palate I will cringe and brace for the worst. Thankfully I have no issues with my current dentist's shots. he is very good with injections. most of time not feeling anything. I'm hoping this was a one time thing for you and the dentist was just off this day. Maybe it was the speed , or i've heard too the temperature of the anesthetic can also make a difference.
