I'm going to put all of my questions in one post, only because I don't want to be jumping around.

I have been experiencing some weird things with my wisdom teeth. My bottom right had no real problems that I can remember. It's on the top of my gums but I'm not sure if they've fully erupted. As far as my bottom left wisdom tooth, it started hurting last Thursday and literally came up within two days. This past Wednesday, I started feeling (with my tongue) that the area near my bottom left tooth felt very gummy (almost raw). After looking at it yesterday, I saw that the tooth was not as erupted as my right, but has half of the tooth covered in my gums. It doesn't hurt (yet), but is just concerning with all of the research I'm doing.

I really want them to be extracted, because of the possible damage that could be done to my jaw, other teeth, etc. I've never had an oral surgery, let alone a surgery for that matter. I have anxiety and hate the sound of things breaking that shouldn't be broken (e.g. snapping finger knuckles, cracking neck). As you can imagine, I don't want to be able to hear the sound of drills and cracking teeth, since this is my first surgery ever. IVs are no problem for me; I've had blood drawn multiple times, therefore I'm not afraid of them. I've been thinking of deep sedation or something like the "twilight" effect. I don't want to be awake (in a way) for something that may haunt me later on (if you know what I mean). If I were to get the deep sedation, what is the aftermath like when I "wake up"?

I'm going to my regular dentist this week, but I want to get my thoughts straight before he recommends me to go to an oral surgeon to get them removed.

I cannot advise you about your wisdom teeth, by now I think you will have seen your dentist. I hope things went well for you. Let us know how you are and what is happening if you feel up to it.

Best wishes :butterfly:

I had three wisdom teeth out a few years ago. An oral surgeon did the surgery under IV sedation. I took valium before I went in (I am a HUGE chicken) and had the IV sedation. I felt nothing during the procedure and remembered very little. I remember the nurse asking me if I could swing my legs around after I was finished. I must have done it because the next thing I remember I was in my bed with a tea bag on one of the extraction sites. I do not remember the car ride home. The recovery was long and slow for me but everyone is different. I was given pain pills which put me in la la land. If you opt for the IV sedation you will need to bring someone along with you. Personally I feel that not knowing is much better than having a local anesthesia. My husband had that when his wisdom teeth were taken out. He said if he had to do it again he would opt for the IV sedation. When I woke I was not in much pain. I was groggy and very tired. I was a little annoyed with the nurse because I just wanted to sleep not swing my legs around. My husband said I walked up the stairs myself with assistance to get to the bedroom. Personally I feel IV sedation is the way to go for tooth extraction. I saw nothing and heard nothing. I still do not remember much about that day or the days that followed which is just the way I like it. I hope I helped you. If I can answer any other questions on my experience with the IV sedation please let me know. Best of luck to you. Please keep me posted. :)

I just had my wisdom teeth consultation with the oral surgeon. I was under the impression that only my bottom two were going to be extracted, but since my X-ray in December, my top two have made their way down to my gums, therefore making me have all 4 (impacted) removed. Yay! Just kidding...

The surgeon went through everything of wht will happen, the IV (thank god), to what I will eat. I totally forgot to ask him if I'll be able to breath? Will I be able to?

Other than that, the surgery is scheduled for this week, and hope to recover over labor day. We'll see! Thanks for everyone's advice.

Glad you are having IV sedation - I'm just  with it :)

It may have some medication in it that makes you 'forget' what has happened, however, that 'forgetting' doesn't include the breathing ;)

All will be good, I wish you well.

Kim
