Im a total coward. I have been on here looked at advise. So far i have told my husband im petrifed of the dentust and spoken to people saying im scared of the dentist. I have been given a number for one a couple of people go to that i know. On nhs choices he comes with good reports.
Problem being its been 9 years ago when i saw a dentist. My gums are receeding and badley bleeding. In top of that my mouth is so sore im suffering with burning tongue which gp thinks is from acid reflux. Im scared of loosing my teeth and having mouth cancer. I know that whatever i need to ser a dentist. Please help me.

Hi there, Claire.

Welcome to the forum. We're all here to support each other.

Don't feel bad that's been 9 years since you went to a dentist; I avoided for 12+ years before I returned to a dental office, after a tooth actually fell out of my mouth.

Everyone here is at different places in their journey. Some are trying to return and just need some support before they make an initial appointment, and some have been through years of treatment, and log on to help others and also seek moral support.

Of course nobody can diagnose you just by your descriptions, but often a person will fear the worst and the news isn't as bad as they thought. After 12 years of no dentistry at all, I needed alot of fillings, but that was pretty much it. No cancer, or root canals or crowns. If you're really worried about oral cancer, then that should be sorted out fairly quickly because a routine exam includes a cancer screening. It's vvery quick, and it doesn't hurt.

It might help you to keep a journal- I know mine helped alot.

You can do this! In the past year, I've had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted as well as 9 other teeth. I have a dental flipper for my front teeth now and I'm amazed at how natural it looks. Did I mention I've been a huge dental phobia my whole life (47 years)?

Hey there. I have had very similar experiences. I was just terrified of the dentist, but had convinced myself I had every dental issue ever seen. I literally changed lanes when driving by a a dentists office, so I would be further away. I think that would be considered a fairly hard core obsession/fear. You have made the first steps. You have the referrals. Now the next step is making an appointment, or maybe just calling one of the offices and explain how you feel and ask how they could help.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your support. I had a lump in my cheek so rather than continue the stress of plucking up the courage to go to dentist i went to the dr he was great he has referred me to a specialist about the lump. I am referref to dental hospital regarding the lump and once sorted i will make that important call to dentist
I am seeing specialist friday my husband is coming but my anxiety is all over the place with worst case et etc.

I hope all goes well with your appointment. I have a major fear of the dentist and anything related. I finally had to get the courage to go because I thought I had a hole in the back of my front lower tooth. So after putting up with the hole for over a week I got the courage together to find a dentist. Turns out it was not a hole in the tooth but a place where a chunk of tartar had come off and they said I needed a "deep cleaning". Fear and dread set in. I was terrified even though I would be sedated...they referred to it as conscious sedation. I had that appointment yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. I slept through most of the appointment but did not have any pain and I was not sore afterwards either. Originially they were going to do left side yesterday and they right side next time but dentist told her to do bottoms first then return for top. I am glad. My bottom teeth look great and feel so good. I return a week from today for the rest and (so far) am not nervous. At least I know what to expect next time.

Best of luck to you and most likely it will not be near as bad as you think. It had been 9 years since I had been to a dentist also,

Hi Clairew! I remember my first visit after years of phobia and my hubby was at my side too. I am sending you good thoughts and support and I know how hard this is for you. I am proud of you. You took that first step and I am sure you can see this through.
