Hello All,

This is my first time on the forum.

OK i have had really bad tooth ache for the past couple of days. I have not been to the dentist for over 13 years due my really bad expereinces at the dentist when i was child (i am now 29). I plucked up the courage to go and i have been told that i need to have a tooth extracted.

Due to my nervousness i was really terrified was shaking in the waiting room and frooze when i went into the dentist room. They have referred me to a dentist that specialises in IV sedation. I have a couple of questions,

1 what happens will i remeber anything?
2 Will i still need a mouth injection before the treatment?
3 How long will the process generally take?
4 How much will potentailly cost?

Sorry i know these sound like silly questions but i am really really nervous about all of this. I wonder how long it will take for my appointment to come through the dentist said he was going to do it yesterday.

Thanks for everyones resposnes in adance

1 what happens will i remember anything?
Maybe depending on depth of the sedation but time will seem to pass very quickly
2 Will i still need a mouth injection before the treatment?
Yes but you shouldn't be aware of it as they will sedate you first
3 How long will the process generally take?
No idea, but if only a single extraction less than 30 mins probably.
4 How much will potentailly cost? Depends where you go. The UK NHS fee for sedation is pretty low.

There are loads of success stories you can read on here from people who have used i/v sedation.

When I had iv sedation they put the IV in my left arm. In a matter of seconds I was more or less asleep. I can remember hearing the music they had playing and I could sense movement around me..but never really felt a thing. No pain..nobody messing around in my mouth..no tugging or anything. In my case the work took 2 and a half hours..but it seemed like a few minutes..then I was awake with my husband standing there looking at me. I slept all the way home..don't even remember the 20 mile ride.

2 Will i still need a mouth injection before the treatment?

Yes, but you'll already be sedated and won't know it.

3 How long will the process generally take?
I had ALL my teeth extracted and it took 2.5 hrs....so I doubt you take longer than 15-20 minutes.

4 How much will potentailly cost?
I have no idea where you are..so that's hard to answer. I can tell you what mine cost. Starting the IV sedation was $395.00..with each additional 15 minutes costing $150 more. A simple extraction was $157.00 per tooth. A more complicated extraction was $250 - $296 per tooth. (I had some that were impacted..some that were just roots that needed dug out.)
Of course I'm sure that varies from dentist to dentist depending on your location etc.

Don't be scared..IV sedation is THE BEST!!! :)

IV is the way to go! My oral surgeon had rates by the 1/2 hour...so the final cost may depend on how long the procedure takes.

Needle stick...you are out...then you wake up and its all done! Somebody will probably have to drive you there & back tho.

Go in, get weighed and sit in chair.

Tiny pinch in the back of the hand, in goes first drug.

Count to ten.

Open eyes. Tooth gone.

It doesn't get much easier than that. I've had IV twice now and I'm up for a third.

Hi All,

Thank you ever so much everyone for all of your prompt responses.

I think i am getting the dental work done on the NHS as i am in the UK. I wonder if they have a long waiting list i am based just in the outskirts of London.

I do feel a lot better now. So i will not feel anything (apart from the slight injection into my hand). Will i need to fast the night before is it like a genearl anasethic or is it different?

Is is just the dentist and dental nurse who will be there?

I have read some of the other posts and alot of people are saying its quite a difficult expereince to describe. I am sure when the time comes round (hopefully soon) as my tooth ache is really hurting me. All i will need to do is close my eyes and think nice thoughts before i drift away.

I am so pleased so many people have gone through the procedure of IV sedation and it appears not to be that bad!

Thanks once again

I'm near Portsmouth and the waiting list is around six weeks, which is why I'm going private. Last time I had IV under NHS, is was £45. Privately, it was £250 - but you are more heavily sedated than NHS one.

You will not feel or remember anything except a tiny little pinch in the hand and maybe just feel a little bit 'drunk' just before it kicks in a few seconds later.

Yes, you will need to fast beforehand. Its about 4 hours beforehand and only clear fluids (water) up to 2 hours before.

The Dentist, Dental nurse and the Aneathetist will be there. You may get a blood pressure cuff fitted before they start and possibly one of them oxygen thingys in your finger.

The effect is like a light switch. One moment you feel a bit woozy, the next instant, you are in the next room wondering what just happened - minus a tooth. It will make you dopey for the rest of the day and you will want to go home and sleep it off. You will have a few LA's whilst you are 'out' and you need to down a few painkillers before they wear off just to take the edge off the aching a bit.

"Not bad?", its fantastic. IV really is the way to go.
