Molar extraction tommorow petrified isn't the word :(

Hey,

I had 3 fillings done around 2 months ago now and one of them has cracked pretty badly went for a second opinion of another dentist and he said it's either a root canal or have it out I chose to have it out and the date is tommorow. I told him I was scared and so on and he understood however when I said about the injection he said it would be a sharp sting for 30-40 seconds! with the numbing gel surely you can't admit to that is it reverse psychology or something?

So now I just keep going over my past experience of the woman putting the injection and it burning like it did before and it's just haunting me at the this point I can't get the thought out of my head. Also what's to be expected with this procedure can you feel them pulling hard on the tooth or what?

Over the last few months, I've met with 5-6 dentists and each one has a different way of injecting the needle. The first time really sucked- the dentist went straight for the nerves and didn't even warn me. Since then, each time it's been a lot better.

One dentist would wiggle the area while he's putting the needle in. It's a silly movement but it makes the needle prick virtually pain free (with the numbing gel on top).

Another dentist, when having to go deep into my gums and cheek, would put a bit of the needle in, shoot some of the numbing medicine in, wait a few seconds, and move down there, repeat the process along the way. He was nearly through my cheek (I was having oral surgery so I really needed to be numbed up) and it was virtually pain free because of slowly injecting the medicine as he went. I totally wanted to hug him for how he did the needle, but he was one of those old school, wouldn't even use my first name (it was always Mrs G) kind of guys.

Talk to your dentist and ask how the dentist will actually be putting the needle in you. As for any needle pain, it will be done and over within 30 seconds and you won't feel much pain after that. I honestly think the worse pain is after the procedure - I still feel pretty sore for a day or two in the areas I had the needle but I'm just sensitive like that.
