Mom had weird reaction to numbing - not sure whether allergic or something else

My mom had a strange reaction to the numbing shot a couple of weeks ago. The dentist was going to work on a broken tooth to prepare it for a crown. He gave her the shot(s) in her gum, and within a few minutes she began trembling violently. Her whole body was shaking and her teeth were rattling together, she said. The dentist was of course very concerned, sat next to her and kept talking to her and asked her to talk back. He was noting everything in her chart during this time. Her speech was slurred, which was his biggest worry. She was shaking so badly that she couldn't dial her phone to call my dad to come pick her up. After about 10 minutes, the shaking began to subside, and she seemed okay after 20 minutes. In the two weeks since, she has had periodic numbness on the OTHER side of her mouth from where he did the numbing. Because of this, she is afraid of something like a stroke, so she decided to go to her doctor today to get checked out. Could this have been an allergic reaction to the anesthetic, or does it sound like something else?

Shaking could be from the epinephrine in the local anesthetic.
