Hello!
I posted a question on another section of this forum, but no one responded. I wondered if I posted it in the wrong place? I have tremendous fear of going to the dentist, though I do go. I had an extraction last year and was utterly terrified, but got through it. I'm now concerned about the area feeling some pain. Here is what I posted:

Hello. It's been a year since I had my upper molar extracted. The one in the very back (forgot what number it is). The oral surgeon did a bone graft at the time of the extraction because I'd said I'd come back in a few months and get the ball rolling for an implant. But ... health matters intervened, and I ended up not doing the implant. Until the last couple of weeks I have not been aware of any problems with the big gaping "hole" where the molar was. Except I'm often aware there's a gaping hole. But no pain. Lately, though, I get a lot of sensitivity slash pain (not sure, but it's a funky feeling) when something cold comes into contact with the area. Funny thing is, I can't figure out exactly if it's the actual hole or the gum area next to it, near the tooth next to it, that's giving me this funky feeling. Does this sound common? Can anyone shed any light on what this might be? I did see the oral surgeon for his "complimentary" two-week checkup after the extraction. Haven't been in touch since. I have had two visits with my regular dentist for routine cleanings. Dread any dental work at all right now, especially if it's an extraction gone bad (whatever that means) as I am only a few months out from hip replacement surgery and kind of worried about an infection. Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this.

I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what they think. Thanks very much!

In October I had my wisdom teeth along with a few other back teeth removed and I experienced very little pain directly after the surgery, and none since then. Perhaps you have sensitive teeth considering you mentioned it hurts when you have some cold to eat/drink. Have you tried using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth? It might help.

Thank you for responding, CrazyCrafter. Yes, I do use that 'sensitive' type of toothpaste. The sensitivity I am getting is only around/in the area where the molar was extracted a year ago. I have not had any problems at all till recently. I am worried. I was hoping to get some answers here, but you are the only one who has responded...so I now I am really worried this is highly unusual to have pain a year after an extracted tooth. I am glad to hear you are not having problems with all of the teeth you had extracted a year ago. That's great! Thanks again.

I read but didn't respond as I'm not sure how useful it will be!

My partner gets pain from an extraction site (it's almost been a year, maybe 11 months I'm not sure).. But as he's not been back to the dentist since I can't say what it is or why. He had his extractions done under general at the hospital as he gags too much for normal treatment.. He's too afraid to go back or have any treatment because of the gagging, he'll leave it until he's desperate!

I've also had some pain from an extraction site but mine is pretty recent (1 wisdom extracted within the last few months, and the tooth next to it was within the last 6 months).. And judging by my awful teeth there's a possibility it's just the single tooth back there that could also be decayed or something!
I've not had a recent X-ray since that wisdom tooth was extracted but there was a shadow beneath it that led the oral surgeon to believe it was infected - hence why it got pulled (it was my decision to opt for that over a rct).. So for me I have several possibilities..

..not useful at all you see!

Try not to worry though, lots of people worry themselves silly and it turns out to be no where close to the disaster the imagine it to be :)

you need to go to a dentist, it sounds like you have an infection starting there. Best to get it checked out now before it gets worse.

Thanks everyone for answering. I do appreciate it. Wow, now I'm really worried silly that you think there is an infection. Is there a dentist on this site who could answer this question, too? Before I ring up the dentist (or should it be the oral surgeon?) I'd just like to know if others including dentists think sensitivity to cold means an infection.
