I had UL7 extracted 10 months ago. I don’t have any wisdom teeth so it was the tooth right at the back.
It had a large abscess at the roots that had been there for several years, and was root canalled in 2021, and then the abscess was healing but still there in 2022. Then the tooth broke and the abscess grew large again (shown on the CT scan to diagnose the crack in the tooth), and the tooth was extracted at the end of 2024. It was a difficult/long extraction but successfully done.
After a month or so, the extraction site would hurt a bit on and off, then it stopped for a while, but since July the extraction site has been aching quite a lot on and off. It is an aching, tight, pulling feeling situated high up right inside the extraction site where the roots would have been. It can be quite bad, going on for hours, and can radiate into my ear. It does go away for some hours of the day as well.
It looks perfectly fine on the outside of the gums – the extraction healed very well and had no dry socket. I don’t have any signs of infection like swollen glands etc, and I don’t have any sharp feelings like spicules working their way out.
I’m not sure if it’s relevant but I also have a bit of pain in the lower jaw, but much less so. LL7 is moving upward a bit into the space and has a deep filling so that could be the cause of the lower jaw pain. LL7 has twisted slightly and now has a little contact with UL6 so I hope it will decide to stop moving now.
This UL7 pain has been going on some time now and is affecting my everyday life.
Please may I ask,
- Does this kind of delayed by months but onoing pain in an extraction site happen sometimes in people – is this normal?
- Could the pain be due to the abscess being cleared away and/or the bone remodelling? Or due to the nerve being damaged during the extraction and now slowly healing and regenerating/reconnecting? I don’t know if an achy feeling like this could come from the nerves (it’s not electrical or hot/cold or tingly pain, just aching).
- Or could the pain be a sensation of the bone melting away due to the lack of pressure on the jaw? Or the nerves expecting a tooth but having nowhere to go? Or what else could it be that’s not a healing response?
- Will the pain likely stop on its own in time, and how long could I expect it to take?
- Would a CT scan of the extraction site area be worth doing, to find out what is going on in there? I would really like to know what’s causing the pain and if there is a treatment that can be done, or if it’s just a good healing process and it will stop eventually.
