Pain after having misplaced filling material sanded away

Hi everyone

This week has been a week of the dentist for me, the first even being having a filling done, second having my hygienist appointment and third seeing an oral surgeon.

After my filling I was unable to floss. There was something trapping it in there. I went back today and they said it was a bit of bond(??) that had got down there. Its a white composite filling.

Anyway, at first he used this weird high speed sander type thing that goes between the teeth.

That did not work.

So he used a big metal "saw" type thing that isn't powered, its manual.

Its all gone now, but I am in horrendous pain, my cheek is swollen, my mouth is throbbing. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned? Could he just have damaged the gum and that is what the pain is from?

I don't know if I can handle going back again this week, especially now after a painful experiencing, just thinking about it makes me nauseous and trembly

I think you should go back to the dentist and tell him or her of your concerns. I had a sore tooth a few years ago and the dentist tried to do rct. He could not do it because for some reason the nerves in that side of my mouth were not responding to the injection. He did an ordinary filling instead and filled the tooth with some bonding liquid which did the trick and the tooth has not been sore for two years now. However, I needed another rct on another tooth the other side which I am in the process of having and my initial fear was that since one side of my mouth could not get numb enough, then this side would be the same, but I just had to trust my dentist and do it and it worked.

Dentists are trained to get people out of pain in whatever way is necessary. If someones mouth does not respond to the treatment, then that is not the fault of the dentist (like nerves not numbing).

The filling I had done was only just needed, tiny wee hole no pain, had filling done, no pain, not until they had to sand away the filling stuff that had got between my teeth, where it should have not been.

I wasn't numbed today when they were getting rid of the bond stuff
