Phobia finally banished in unusual circumstances!

Hello again to all on the site. I have been posting my journal regarding my journey from extreme phobia to dental confidence, titled "Smiles Better" in the "journals" section for the last few months.

Today (Saturday 4th August 2018 AD) I find myself in a totally unexpected situation; last night (Friday) I was cleaning my teeth as usual and had a terrible mishap in that the small brush I was using decided to snap and embed half of itself in between my nagging back tooth and its neighbour. I had tried to poke it back out and drew blood, but to no avail. I rinsed it out with a mouthwash to settle it and then was faced with seeking some emergency help this morning.

Sadly, the two private practices I might have approached were closed, so I found myself in the centre of Ely (UK) with a sore tooth and the NHS practice that was open and hence on duty for today.

I need not have worried; I went in to a very welcoming young lady in reception who got me in to see a very decent indian guy within 20 minutes. He was absolutely superb; the offending article was removed within 5 minutes with absolutely no discomfort whatsoever. He was very thorough, carefully raking through the gap with two hand tools and a water scaler, finally removing the debris through suction from an equally nice and professional nurse. The surgery itself was equally modern and spotless with the latest technology and discreet lights, making for a very comfortable and efficient experience.

The best bit? It cost me nothing! Bless their hearts. Very very highly recommended indeed. Having to face this on the spur has in fact effectively banished my dental phobia for good, and as I have said before, the long term wisdom for regular care is its all down to finding the right person and decent surroundings.

The place I used is NHS (unusually) and it looks as though private care is available as well. They are a branch of "My Dentist" (all over the UK) and the place is called "Chequer Hall" in Chequer Lane Ely (UK). Their phone number is (01353) 668281. Definitely the first port of call for emergencies in this area. Simon XX

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I have since learnt that the practice I went to is sadly full at present but it appears that they must obviously take a turn at being the emergency dental drop in centre for the area. It was lucky for me that they were on that day.

Because of this accident, I have bitten the bullet once more and signed up to my local practice so that I can access short notice care and moreover negate the need to plan transport as this place is but a few paces from my front door! My civil partner already goes there and speaks very highly of them. I had hoped to get a brief consultation today (Monday 6th August 2018 AD) for piece of mind as I am still in periodic discomfort following the injury, but have managed to get one for next Wednesday (15th). I am down in London for the week with work so will have to resort to Whitechapel or Guys hospitals to get me out of trouble should the problem flare up badly; I know I am in good hands in either place having used them in the past during previous treatments.

The new place I will be using has also had a good plug on here in the past; they are called "Enhance Dental Spa" and based in Ely Cambridgeshire (UK). I was welcomed very nicely by the reception staff on first entry and, like the place I have been using to date, also wear tunics that are very much fitting of a hair salon so very accessible, and again the waiting area very homely with sofas and no nasty dentistry things to upset anywhere. I will be seeing a lady called Meghan who also specialises with phobia anxiety and special needs cases for all ages, so this looks equally promising. They had still got my last email so had a good resume of my special needs to be getting on with, though I will take an updated copy in with me to save having to keep retelling my harrowing tale each time! A nice touch this time is that at least I know what this lady looks like, as the practice has a superb information folder with full details and face pictures of all key staff so one is not surprised unduly on first meet.

If all goes well, I will post on here titled "Enhance Dental Spa" and hence my "Smiles Better" journal will end. If disappointing, my next scheduled appointment in September will take place and the journal as "Smiles Better" will continue after the next appointment there occurred.

Hope everyone sees this, as there will now be two journals to follow this; yesterday (Thursday 16th August 2018 AD) I went to my current practice as an emergency case, and this will be in my ongoing journal titled "Smiles Better". This will be the last post in this section, as I have now indeed also signed up to a local practice called "Enhance Dental Spa" in Ely. I went to this new practice for the first time last week for the same emergency reasons and will detail about this, my findings and ongoing care in a new Journal titled "Enhanced Dentistry". You can find both of these in the "Journals" section under these two relevant headings. To close this brief note, I would like to thank all who helped me to get from phobia to freedom and am now completely freed from dental phobia for good (although the usual slight anxieties will probably show from time to time!). What a revolution we have seen in the dentistry world in recent times! Long may it continue. Love Simon XX
