Pretty Scared...

Hello, i'm 16 years old and i'm afraid of the dentist ever since my first root canal with adult teeth when I was 12. On December 3rd I have to go to the dentist for 3 root canals and 5 fillings.. It's so embarrassing I hate talking about my teeth.. I'm receiving oral sedation for the procedure, I just hope it's enough to get me through the whole thing. I guess i'm getting some Valium the night before, some Valium in the morning, some Ativan when I get to the dentist and 2 pills that start with a 'D'(If you know what they are please tell me), and some Nitrous Oxide(Laughing gas). I really really hope it's enough to keep me sedated and feel comfortable.. Do you think it will be enough? Please I need some support.. Thank you.. First Post

Hi Clayfin... I know exactly how you feel. With the right dentist you will not even feel the local anesthetic. Then when you are properly numbed you will not be in any pain. You will be able to hear sounds and stuff but no pain. Since you are taking oral sedation you probably won't even know it happened. I really think everything will go very well. If anything makes you uncomfortable, raise your hand and let the dentist know.

Hmmm...well If the "D" medication is Diazepam, that is just the generic name for Valium which could very well be the case . It sounds like you will have more than enough sedation though. Have you had experience with sedation before? I really do believe that it probably will be enough based on experiences that people have posted about oral sedation and nitrous oxide on the forum. They have been shown to both be very successful when used separately and in combination. Just make sure that you feel comfortable with your dentist and trust them as much as you can prior to starting the procedure. I also second what Tabatha has said.

Yes, i've had IV Sedation, but nobody will do root canals around here under IV Sedation. I've had 3 teeth pulled last year with IV Sedation, it was great. This oral sedation is new to me and last time I heard "it won't even hurt" turned out to be a huge lie, so i'm extremely anxious about it and if it'll be enough, ya know? Is it possible I take valium in the morning and then two when I get to the dentist? Thanks so much for helping.

That does sound like quite a bit of oral sedation. If it was me, I'd be nearly unconscious from that much (which is probably what you are hoping for). I have had more fillings than I can count and also 2 root canals, but extractions and crowns. I've only had local anesthetic (I will not take oral sedation b/c I have too much of a need for control and too much of a worry of becoming dependent on them) and can honestly tell you that all of those procedures CAN be done pain free. The root canals were to most pain-free of all. It does sound like a lot of work to do in 1 appt... is that your preference? If not, maybe they can spread it out over 2 or 3 appts?
