referral to dental hospital

I recently visited the dentist after my doctor mentioned I may have an infection in my tooth after having sinusitis for 3 months. This would be my first visit for 6 years due to having issues with the anesthetic in the previous 2 visits requiring fillings where although my cheek and tongue would go numb my gum and teeth would not, needless to say my dentist proceeded with the work to my discomfort.

So I braved my appointment and after having an x ray and check up was indeed told I had an infection above a tooth she had filled in my last visit (1st molar on the top jaw), and I would require 5 fillings to be done, so booked for the work to be done.

For the extraction I received 8 lots of 2 injections, in the gum, back of the mouth and in the tooth itself (painful!) and believed after this it had worked. After about 2 minutes of extracting the tooth the pain became unbearable and I asked her to stop. She said I would need to be referred to a hospital where I could be put under general anesthetic which I happily agreed to.

I cancelled the appointment to have the fillings done on 3 occasions after having sleepless nights just thinking about it. I asked the receptionist for the contact details for the hospital I had been referred to so I could check on my appointment only to be told that they do not offer a general anesthetic and their waiting list was full until July anyway!

The worry I have now is the lump that developed after the attempted extraction, it is not painful, just annoying and occasionally throbs. So the question is when I speak to my dentists receptionist again how long should it take to get an appointment at a dental hospital in the UK (south west)?

(p.s. I literally have no problems facing my fears like heights and falling, I actually quite enjoy it! But the fear I felt just waiting for my fillings to be done was unbelievable!)

Waiting time is usually about 2 months for your first consultation then another 2 months to have the treatment booked so approximately four months depending on how busy your hospital trust is. If you can't wait, you can either try and be brave and have another attempt at the extraction with local anaesthetic only or under Iv sedation. Personally I would go for the latter with an experienced male dentist for extractions.
I don't want to sound politically incorrect but most 'older' male dentists seem to be much more efficient at taking teeth out than my female friends. Technique is very important!

As for the rest of the fillings, it's very hard for you to go back because you had a terrible experience but delaying the fillings will only let them get worse.
