Root canal failure

I am so scared. I don't have a lot of money and don't know what to do.

I had tooth pain, they put a temp crown on since they saw a small crack, and started the root canal. 6 days later it is still very painful. It is better, but it still hurts to bite down and cold water (not as much, but I had some ice water today and it was horrific and didn't go away).

Is my only option to have it extracted now? I can't really function without advil. I am on steroids and antibiotics with no luck.

Please help? I'm not sure if I should continue trying (and blowing every cent I have) or have it extracted. It's a back molar, and they are all crowned, root canaled, etc. They say they can't do a bridge but I can't afford implants. What to people do?

The issue about the ice water is peculiar if you are feeling it at the tooth with the root canal. If it was a tooth with just a normal crown then it would be expected to have some sensitivity to hot or cold because temps aren't as good at keeping liquids away from the remaining tooth. The root canal should have removed all nerves and so there should not theoretically be any sensitivity. Perhaps I could be wrong on this. It also should be noted that it can take a long time for root canals to fully heal. I had one on a front tooth about 16 months ago that my dentist said is still healing (which is normal as they can take a few years to properly heal). I would not have guessed this as it basically feels the way it's supposed to mostly. If you have any concerns, just call your dentist and mention it. Even if they don't think it is a big deal you can probably request an appoint just to have the dentist make sure. If your dentist is like most and is hard to book day of then you can ask to either be put on a waiting list or simply express that if something came available in the immediate future then you would really like to be seen.

Thank you so much. It is still throbbing pain 6 days later. The tooth next to it looks a little questionable, but it feels good to me. I just don't know what's wrong. Why does it hurt so bad after all this time? He didn't finish the root canal, perhaps he missed some? It could also be cracked.

The best thing to do if you are in pain and feeling anxious would be to just call first thing in the morning and let them know your situation. Even if it is healing correctly and the procedure was done correctly it can do wonders just to hear that straight from the dentist after he takes a look.

Thank you so much for all your help. You are all so nice here. I am calling them first thing in the morning. I don't think it should hurt so much after all this time. It's better, but it still hurts almost as much as before I went in.

They are seeing me this afternoon. Today it is not sensitive to cold. It was just that one time. It does hurt to bite down. It feels about the same as before the root canal. He just did a pulpectmy. Does that mean they can save the tooth or is it fractured?

He went in there and did more. Now two days later it's still just as bad. Why? I have no pain meds. I don't know what to do. Please help. It's pretty bad. Is this normal? He said it might be uncomfortable for a while because there is more to do, but I'm about to scream sometimes. Does it get worse before it gets better?
