This is my first batch of cavities EVER and I'm terrified. I have some pretty massive cavities and got a terribly painful root canal last week. The temp filling hasn't stopped throbbing. This week I'm going in twice to get 6 cavities filled in and a couple are "borderline" root canals. I'm so scared about how much all this will hurt and I fear that I've messed up my teeth forever. My dentist is going to do silver treatments in the biggest cavities in hopes that they hold and don't fail.

Hi @rabbittuna62, are you saying that the root canal treatment itself hurt, or that the pain was terrible beforehand? Just checking because if the treatment itself was terribly painful.

@letsconnect Both. The treatment was especially bad. I could feel exactly how deep the drill went.

Have you considered changing to a different dentist? Dental treatment should not be painful in this day and age.

Hello- I have had a root canal and there was some pain after but eventually it went away. It was pain free however during the process. I am surprised they are suggesting silver. I have had many many teeth restored with deep fillings and they only used porcelain. Some cover my entire tooth and look natural. Maybe try a different dentist? My dentist used a pulp cap to help with any potential future root sensitivity and so far I have not needed any root canals. Try to find what they call a conservative dentist. Also maybe don’t get them all done on one day. I usually only get one or two at a time. It gets easier. But honestly it should be pain free. You are going to feel so much relief when it is over. My dentist has a ceiling screen to watch nature videos. No sound but it really helped to relax me.
