3.5 hrs in the dental chair! 3 teeth worked on!
I finally did it! After 15 years of neglect and fear, I finally did it! And, I'm the world's worse dental patient.
Last Monday, I had IV sedation. Was in the dental chair for 3.5 hours. It
seemed like 5 minutes!
I had a crown that had to be replaced. Also, I had a broken tooth that needed to be pulled or repaired. Plus I had another tooth with a cavity that had to be filled. Also, I had to have major cleaning to start clearing up gum disease.
I even had TWO dentists there -- one was a regular dentist and one was a peridontist.
The one major thing I wanted stressed with the dentists is that I did not want to remember anything. Well, I did remember some things, but I wasn't scared at all. I wasn't anxious or upset.
Before the appointment, I was so scared. But, I have had major toothaches in the past few months. The pain was so severe that I thought I was going to pass out from the pain. I was worried about having an abscess and going into my heart.
So, here's how it played out on Monday.
The night before, the peri gave me 10 mgs of Valium to help me relax. Then, at midnight, I could have nothing to eat or drink.
In the morning, my husband took me to the office. They took me back and checked my blood pressure. It was really high. (I have high blood pressure and was very scared!)
I took some more blood pressure medicine, and the peri hooked me up to the ekg monitors. She put the IV in. I have done fertility treatments so being pricked by a needle doesn't bother me. However, I cannot see the needle or I may pass out.
The assistant came in and needed to do a quick impression of the tooth (with the bad crown). The peri started the anti-nausea drug and anxiety medicine. Then, she started the happy meds.
I vaguely remember them numbing my gums and then I must have fallen asleep.
I do remember waking up (ie. "becoming aware") a few times. I remember hearing the drill at one point, but I quickly fell back asleep.
I had to get up out of the chair twice to go to the bathroom. During those times when I "woke up", I was not scared or anxious at all. I was not aware of the time. It seemed like I was only in the chair for 5 minutes.
The result of everything: They had to pull the broken tooth and do some bone grafting. It was a big molar.
The failed crown was replaced, but I still need a root canal done on that tooth. (I knew that the two dentists were not going to do the root canal. It's a failed root canal that requires a little more expertise.)
They fixed one cavity and did the scaling of my teeth and gums.
It was a very positive experience! I feel like a new person!
I still need some more work done. I do have bad gum disease, but I think it can be mostly reversed. I need a root canal on that one tooth still. And, the missing tooth may be replaced by a dental implant.
I'm even thinking I may let them remove my wisdom teeth (which I have been totally against because I was so scared.)
Sorry for the long post! IV sedation = best thing in the whole world...

That's a long time to be under, I'm in awe of you 
O'h and the last bit of your post made me 
as apparently I said to the nurse in the recovery room something along the lines of " I was promised a party"
