Terrible news at dentist

@katk That's a real shame. Certainly makes it more difficult. I suppose hope for the best but prepare for the possibility of bad news?

Ask lots of questions. I must annoy the dentist because I ask and ask and ask and....

Anyway, I like to get the info. Because, much like yourself - I hate not knowing.

@anonfemale thanks, this forum is certainly hoping me, everyone is so lovely, understanding and full of empathy. I think I beat myself up more than I should over my situation but that's just me I guess! And never have I experienced anxiety quite like it. I'm glad you bone loss seems to have stayed as it was, I hope it continues that way for you.

@katk Thanks. I'm glad the forum is helping you. I agree about everyone on the forum. I kept blaming myself for having the bone loss but then I thought there's nothing I can do to change what has already happened but it can be prevented from getting any worse by brushing with the electric toothbrush and using the interdental brushes and waterpik every day and by having a good diet. What kind of toothbrush do you use and have you ever used interdental brushes and a waterpik?. Is your diet good?. My diet is better now than it used to be. I understand about how much anxiety you can get about this and everyone that you talk to on the forum is here to help you and to talk about anything that worries you.

@anonfemale I use an electric toothbrush and floss every day. Not heard of a waterpik though? My diet is OK and not massively high in sugar, the dentist made this comment too

@katk Yes, indeed! But there may be something you can do to change your situation. There's still hope. When will you hear more from your dentist?

@smirked they are waiting for me to book the deep clean..my husband thinks it's over priced so wants to call another dentist on Monday but I'm.just tempted to get on with it, it's co summing me too much!

Sorry I meant that I think that I cant change how much bone loss I already have but some things can be changed such as preventing the bone loss from getting any worse and preventing any other parts of my mouth from getting worse and as smirked said, there could be something you can do to change your situation.

It's good that your diet is ok and not massively high in sugar.

What method of deep cleaning are they going to do? They may be trying to have you on a new treatment called "Airflow" which is a new method of scale and polish. It's expensive but worth it for nervous patients because it uses warm water and is (I've been told) a lot less invasive.

@smirked I am kit sure! She just said deep clean. 2x 1 hour treatments a side each week totalling £500!!

@katk Ouch, that does seem rather expensive. Even for the Airflow treatment. But perhaps it depends on level of cleaning required as the treatments will take longer.

I know people that had Airflow cleaning done for about £100 or so. But their mouths were in generally good health.

@smirked oh gosh that does make me wonder, perhaps they are a high end dentist? Is there such a thing as shopping around? I really don't know!!

@katk Your husband is on it. I suspect he'll find a better price. That's an awful lot of money for teeth cleaning, he's right to get at the very least, a second opinion on the matter.

@smirked that's what he thinks too! Will have to see romorrow!

@katk A waterpik sprays water in to your mouth. You hold it near the gum line and it gets rid of food and plaque that's in your mouth. Interdental brushes also clean in between the teeth. You hold them at the gum line and push them gently backwards and forwards in between your teeth five times.

@katk Just wanted to say I was told I had gum disease back in 2017 when I had to have a tooth extraction. I did actually buy myself a water flosser as a result. Interestingly when I went back to a dentist I think 2022 (I was too scared to go to a dentist in between those times plus I had to move a lot!) and when I asked the new dentist then he said he he can't see any signs of it so it must had healed. I've had no mention of it since so I'm guessing the water floss had helped in my case. I do love it and one thing I had noticed after a time using it my gums did started getting stronger as I could only use the lowest weakest pressure level and now I can do much higher stronger level - not the strongest but I think it has 5 levels so from 1 I can do 4!
My newest dentist said I've got some gum loss by my (now root canaled) infected tooth and underneath it. He said the loss because the under tooth gum loss was caused by the infection it will heal after the infection has gone but it'll take months like 6+ however the gum loss on the side where I had an extraction won't as it wasn't caused by the infection. I'm not bothered by it though and it seems to be a small amount, hopefully it'll won't get worse.
Also that deep cleaning I agree is extremely expensive! The most expensive dentist in my area are charging £127 for 40 minutes.

Thank you! Apparently mine is severe hence the cost? I'm just shaken by this whole thing and don't know what's right or wrong! I'm pleased to you that you are doing so well! It's inspirational!

@katk I hope the waterpik flosser and interdental brushes help for you.

@littletiger I am so pleased to hear that your gums improved when you used the waterpik flosser.

Interdental brushes are a game changer. They say 40% of tooth surfaces are between teeth. Too late for me, however! But could make a difference for you OP.
