TERRIFIED of root canal-- severe pain??

I'm 17 and I need a root canal.. we found out almost a year ago that I need one, but I convinced my parents to put it off because my tooth wasn't bothering me. Last night it started hurting and is still hurting very, very badly and I can barely eat. I don't want to tell my parents though because I'm so scared.. I was scared when I first found out that I needed one and now I'm even more scared because it's been so long and I'm worried that it will hurt even more. I think I'm also scared because I don't know what to expect. I've never gotten a filling or anything other than a cleaning really.. What should I do? Please help??

You should definitely tell them. I know it can be hard, I did something similar with a cavity a while back and it ended up needing a root canal. If you have any fear at all. Tell them so that they can give you some more novocaine. They did that for me and it helped a lot, I didn't really feel anything.

Also, just try to relax. I know it can be scary and overwhelming getting a root canal so young. I'm 18, and I still had to bring my mom with me because I don't do well at the dentist in general, and I was extra worried about the root canal. Take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to tell them that you are afraid.

I had a root canal a few months ago and I was TERRIFIED because of all the horrible things I had heard about it. But let me tell you, it was not bad at all. The worst part about it was that it was long, boring, and made my neck hurt from lying in the chair. That's it! Easier than some fillings I've had and with no pain at all! You've survived a toothache so you can get through a root canal.

Let your doctor know that if you have any discomfort you'll raise your hand and he or she should stop. They're usually really concerned about your comfort in these procedures. My office even had a TV I could watch when it was going on!

I had one done in 2006 mid 20s, my dentist at the time claim I had abscess so needed a root canal. I did have sinus problems in 2005 over Christmas which made my mouth hurt and needed to see a dentist to see whether there were any problems (not being my own dentist, he gentle tapped each tooth)

The root canal was done in three sessions for me.

It is important even if you are scared to get it treated as soon as possible, as you may need the tooth taken out if you don't and having to think about what to replace the gap.

If you are afraid tell the dentist, receptionist staff, assistant there will help you.
