Re: Ok SCARED Need HELP!!!!

I just sent you a Pm...you can do this...I know that you can[smiley=hug.gif]

Re: Ok SCARED Need HELP!!!!

Can't your dentist give you some sedation? Your blood pressure isn't an issue for that.

Re: Ok SCARED Need HELP!!!!

Yes they offerd Ativan at 250.00 a pill I just cannot afford this with the amount of work I have to get done??>:(

Re: Ok SCARED Need HELP!!!!

There are other relaxants out there as well. Valium seems to be a common one for soothing the savage phobic (yours truly). I know others on the board as well have been prescribed various relaxants in the same class. They DO work!!!!

The being afraid of needles is one thing, but I can tell you that if the dentist is any good, close your eyes and you won't even have a clue! Mine uses a topical before doing the injections and its "poof" numbing already?

Re: Ok SCARED Need HELP!!!!

I'm sure that if you get valium that will be a great help to you and its only around £4 for 10, or was it 20 pills, can't remember now, because after my appointments I threw them away.

I am sitting in tears*:'(
I am going for two root canals tomorrow at noon!!
I am not doing well at all!
I really really am too scared to do this!!
I cant have any sedation because I have no ride there and back I have to drive my self!!
I just want to do this and get it done and over with!!
But instead I am sitting and crying because I am soooooooooooooo very very very very very very scared!!!*:'(

You can do it! I was doing the exact thing earlier this week. I was crying and having some pretty decent anxiety attacks. I got there though and honestly he did the two extractions I had scheduled AND a filling on the one tooth that had been hurting and it went absolutely smoothly and faster than I had hoped or maybe as fast because believe me I wanted in and out of there. I'm glad it's done now. My front teeth were making me ashamed, they were decaying and not looking so hot. Oh not to mention I couldn't even drink anything that was colder than lukewarm because it hurt.

My therapist tells me that breathing will prevent a lot of things happening that we don't want. She says to focus on the breath out especially. s-l-ow-l-y breath out and then in and then out so slowly and notice it. You can pay attention to the abdomen if you like or the air flowing through the nostrils so gently. If that doesn't help try repeating reassuring things to yourself, it keeps the scary thoughts away and makes sense. "He'll be done soon and I will be going home" "I am ok" "This isn't bad" whatever you want. Try some music if you find that distracting and relaxing.

I'll keep you in my thoughts, I am sending all my support.

I know it is very hard to open up to people about having a dental phobia and of course you have done great in joining this site and revealing the depths of your fear. However, having done that, usually does make it a little easier to confide in someone in your family or friend circle. Is it not possible to speak to someone close to you to ask if they could accompany you to your appointment? It would be of double benefit in that you would be able to take something like valium, and also having actual physical support would work wonders.
If it is now too late for this as your appointment is looming, and you will indeed be driving yourself, do be extra careful and drive slowly because although not under the influence of any calming drugs, the extent of your fear might in fact be affecting your concentration.
Whatever you ultimately decide or are able to arrange, whether you do go through it on your own or can have someone to go with you, just try and be aware that there are loads of us here who will be supporting and thinking of you, sending positive, calming vibes your way, although not physically with you. So, all our best wishes, we know you can get through it, we perfectly understand your fears but perhaps with some form of sedation there, such as nitrous, which wears of immediately you will be able to drive and in any case the dentist would never let you go off until you were perfectly recovered to do so.

All the best, just try and focus on the after, and how great you will feel, relief at it all being over and pride in having gone through it.:grouphug:

I have high blood pressure, too, and have had being put to sleep "Improve" my blood pressure. Try having a double tea bag mug of chamomile Tea. It really helps with nerves.

Hopefully by today you have already started on the road to healthier teeth by going to your first appointment.;D

I can totally relate to your situation. It's kind of sad but the whole time I was reading your posts I was almost in tears because I have had and still have today the same reactions and fears about going to the dentist that you describe and talk about. I don't want to say exactly what happened that turned me off dentists and root canals because I don't want to make you any more nervous then you already are, but it was not fun.

What I will say, however, is that root canals aren't as bad as they sound. I've had two(2) root canals in all four(4) of my front teeth. Yeah, I know, my teeth aren't exactly works of art. But I survived all those root canals, and you can, too.

And if you're still having doubts about going, just think, if you do get that work done then anyone else on this board with the same fears will see that and they'll say to themselves, "Hey, if she can do it, so can I!!!"

If you don't go and have the work finished, the guilt of not going and the dread of still having to go and have it done will be hanging over your head for who knows how long, and no one wants that; it's no fun, trust me.

I guess all I can say is that I really hope that you do have your teeth worked on. And always remember that no matter what dental-dangers (;D) you encounter, you'll always have all the love and support you need here on this board.

And believe me when I say this, you're a heck of a lot braver than me to have at least made the appointment to start getting the work done.

Lots of Love

--Amelia
