Will penicillin vk reduce tooth pain before getting to dentist?

I have very excruciating and chronic tooth pain. I think it might be around the root gum area. The tooth has been root canaled years ago. I went to the emergency room because I don't have the money to get to the dentist, and was prescribed penicillin vk, 500mg, 4 times a day for ten days. I was wondering if this will help relieve the pain before I get to the dentist? I was able to find a clinic that will help me, but they will not be able to see me until six days from now. I started taking the penicillin yesterday morning, so it has been almost two days.

Sorry to hear you are in pain, can you get some over the counter pain killers to help nurofen and paracetamol (? Motrin and Tylenol ? I think it may be known by with you??? ) the penicillin will eventually help with the pain when it starts to kill the infection but is not a painkiller in its own right.

I've been in a similar situation to you with a previously root canalled tooth. I ended up needing a stronger antibiotic, metronidazole and the pain eased very soon after starting it. (It was later changed to clindamycin and amoxicillin as it turned out I can't tolerate metronidazole). Most people seem to find penicillin does the job and the pain should ease in a few days but if it doesn't, you might have to go back to get something different. Mine cleared up so well, it was tempting not to do anything more about it but I knew if I didn't get the tooth treated by the dentist, it would just keep coming back. I know some people just get the tooth extracted which would be much cheaper. I got my root canal re-done and it cost a lot. (Still not finished either). I really feel for you as I know how painful and stressful it is.

Thanks for the information. I think the antibiotics are starting to kick in because I am feeling some relief. Knock on wood. The tooth is part of a bridge, which has been root canaled years ago. I think its a periodontal gum disease type infection. I have an appointment at a clinic on Wednesday. In the meantime I have been using a sonicare brush and doing warm salt water rinses.
