Wisdom Teeth ! Scared Out Of My Mind!

Hello,
Tomorrow is the day for my Wisdom tooth extraction. I will be put under with GA. My bottom two are impacted and my two uppers are fine. However, I am super scared of falling asleep! Do you just fall asleep? I read that you will feel hot? Like hot as in, burning?! For the general anesthesia, do they put a needle in your arm and then BAM you're out? I know they spray some cold freeze thing on your arm before they insert the IV. Do you know you're falling asleep? Are you tired? Or do you just knock out like someone just hit you on the head? UGH! I'm so nervous, I was freaking out about it yesterday and crying extremely! I'm looking forward to waking up and realizing how fast the procedure went, but the anticipation is killing me! I'm clueless on it all. All my friends have been put under while getting their teeth taken out, however I'm the last to do so. They say it's a piece of cake. What about Anesthesia Awareness?! How often does that happen? I'm not worried about the healing process or nothing, just the sleeping! People say you fall asleep within seconds! Are you aware of you drifting?!

I have had several GA for several medical issues and IV for dental ones. There are several techniques for giving GA, but I will tell you what happened to me as a idea of what may happen.

Its very simple. A needle goes into the back of the hand (could also be inside of elbow) and one of two chemicals go in. The first one is a sedative which makes you feel woozy quite quickly and then the other one, the GA agent, goes in. By the time that one goes in, you really don't care about anything at this point. I didn't actually feel any sensation of the GA coming on. One moment I am laying there waiting for it to happen - then I'm instantly waking up wondering what's happened. Its so fast, its instantly quick.

To be honest, its not unplesant and would not hesitate having any GA like that. The absolute WORST thing about GA is worrying about it. I have had several GA's and techniques have improved with time. It really, really isn't as bad as you would imagine.

If anything, you may feel a bit sick afterwards as a side effect. Sometimes you may be given a little pill beforehand to avoid it.

Please don't worry. Its not as bad as you think.

I had an i.v. GA for my wisdom teeth and honestly .... it was the best thing I could have done. Like you I was worried sick but after the injection I was gone in maybe 3 seconds, no getting hot no real feelings at all.

Consentrate on afterwards, the relief is totally amazing and you also will wonder what you worried about.

I've had UK hospital GA twice (once for wisdom teeth and once for something else)....your friends are right..it is a breeze....there is no sensation that I recall to losing consciousness...count back from 10...you barely get to 9 and you're out. No burning, no feeling hot.

I remember feeling distinctly annoyed one time at being woken up as I was enjoying my sleep .

It is not an injection at all really..it is an i/v line which is 'just a scratch' at worst and as you say there is also numbing spray option thesedays (even without numbing spray it is barely a scratch if done expertly)....and then the fluid is put in down the i/v line.

You won't regret it..it is by far the easiest way to deal with impacted wisdom teeth i.m.v.
Anaesthesia awareness is extremely rare and they would no doubt be alerted by a rise in your blood pressure which is monitored constantly - ask the anaesthetist for reassurance on that one. No one has ever reported it on here.
